Or the Tau deciding they want to expand again. The Tau are continually trying to spread their culture to nearby human settlements in hopes of "converting" them, as seen in the first Ciaphas Cain books.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

"Although Hive Fleet Gorgon had wrought havoc over a sizable swath of the Tau Empire, the IoM considered it to have been a minor threat. The Tyranid forces encountered by the Cadian Army on Kel'shan were but a fraction of Hive Fleet Gorgon's former might. Castellan Crask wasted no time in declaring the Tau weaklings for their apparent inability to scour such a minor threat. This viewpoint, and the willfully misinterpreted conclusions that fed it, was the chief precipitating factor that led to the iron hammer campaign, which escalated into the greatest confrontation yet seen between the IoM and the Tau Empire. But that is a story for another time..."

The attitude helped precipitate a campaign which eventually led into a conflict with the Tau. Not exactly a direct cause.

I'm not arguing about who started it, just that there was a, near as I can tell, fairly recent large scale conflict between Tau and the IoM. Always a little hard to tell the way GW will jump back and forth in the timeline

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
