If you mean some aliens who are not all about wiping the IoM off the map, the Tau are interested in co-operating with you on a variety of exciting projects.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Gotta go with the Tau here. I remember a picture from one of the older tau codexs, of and imperial fist chilling with some tau.

The Marine from the accompanying story is disgusted by the whole thing, and would rather be putting the boot in. However the Imperial Advisor that is with him is not so harsh.

I heard the Tyranids are pretty big on the Imperium, they don't ask for much other than your biomass... so i'd go with them

You don't mention what you play now?

Fluffwise both the Tau and the Eldar have worked towards common goals in the short term with folks from the IoM. I don't like that though, I say get something totally opposite from what you have now, if you have IG, get Nids or CSM, if you have SM get Tau, Eldar, or Necron.

DE supposedly are maybe possibly coming out with a new codex at the end of the year/begging of next year, if you can wait another 3-9 months I'd say start a DE army.

I too think for a second army, go with the OPPOSITE of what you play for sure. Dont worry about some stupid co-op thing. If your a true IoM type, youll know that the only time they play nice when they absolutely have to, then they kill everything. So your just dreaming. Go opposite, who knows you just might REALLY latch onto that army.

FLuff-wise Space Elfs and Space People have been allies many times, even in the latest Red Space Marine book they nod to that.

ANd you can see what, the Space Elfs wear white robes, pointy hats and oppress the darkies, they have a lot in common with the Space People.

Playing-wise none of them are close to the IG or Marines (which do you play?). Eldar may be the closest with similar units relying on heavy weapons and veteran sgt equivlents.

I would agree that the Eldar or Tau would really be closest thing to hanging with the Imperium. The Tau are easily more willing to do that, but the Eldar have been known to try and help out when its beneficial to them

Tau hands-down. Unlike the Eldar, they do it out of naivety rather than manipulation for their own goals.

When picking an army I choose one that exemplifies a different characteristic to my others. My Marines are a very mobile and solid force, so when I picked Tau they are a very static army. When I picked Orks I went for a very foot slogging assualt based army.

Eldar will actively ally with the Imperium and are quite happy to let the Imperium do their own thing provide they are left alone. Granted, if chaos got wiped out or at least severely beaten down that would change but we all know that won't happen.

So long as you submit to their rule. They don't cooperate, they dominate and subsume.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Not according to what the Tau's designer wrote.

Original Tau designer notes wrote:
In contrast to other races, we wanted the Tau to be altruistic and idealistic, believing heartily in unification as the way forward. This meant that they would happily incorporate other races into their empire without subjugating them, instead enticing them in with the benefits of mutual protection, trade and technology.

Tau and eldar have both been noted to ally with the imperium against a common foe (Tau probably more readily than eldar), especialy chaos, necrons or 'nids. There is also a clan of Orks (cant remember their name) which have been known to sell themselves as mercenaries.

I play IG too, and I'm seriously thinking that the next army I start will be Tau, probably when and if they ever get a new codex. I like the looks and concept of the Tau, those tanks and suits are just neat.

That's my favorite picture of a space marine, because it shows just how TALL he is compared to the Tau (there's a human in that picture too)

After the Daemocoles crusade, the Tau and Impirium seemed willing to cooperate, but the two sides don't trust eachother.

The Eldar help out the Imperium on occasion, but usually they only do so when it benefits the Eldar. Some orks have been known to fight on the side of the imperium (only if that was the fastest way into a battle though...and usually only the blood axe clan)

So basically, any army but nids necrons daemons chaos or dark eldar should be fine

And you could always start up an inquisition army whenever they come out.

I cannot conceive of any circumstances in which a conflict would arise between the IoM and the Tau Federation.

Unless due to some treacherous underhanded move by the IoM.
