Why are these threads only filled with two options:

1. Movie soundtracks.
2. Heavy (often Nordic) Metal.

No middle ground?

Are you including the original MK soundtrack, as in the one by The Immortals released for the original arcade game?

'Cause that's easily one of the worst CD's I've ever had the horror of listening to.

What about NIN's Year Zero?
The whole album is about Trent Reznor's apocalyptic fantasy where the whole world goes to 1984.
Should be suitable for epic ass-kickery music.
Or you could just use Ministry's Land of Rape and Honey for awesome beats and sound (I think 4 or 5 out of 10 tracks actually have understandable vocals on them)

I think the Gladiator soundtrack would fit quite well.

Can't speak for everyone else, but while I like plenty of other music, and will quite often play other music when gaming (wierd al gets a lot of airplay, as do the various Triple J Hottest 100's) they don't set the background as successfully.

That, and it seems that gaming attracts a lot of metalheads

I don't have the game soundtrack. I was referring to the two movies.

Depends on what sort of backdrop you want for your game of toy soldiers... sometimes I listen to the cardigans or the sugarcubes while playing 40k.

Granted... there are metal suggestions as well.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

My personal reccomendation is the Empire theme from Star Wars OR any LotR soundtrack.

Classical music is good as well. Beethovens 5th is pretty cool, play it on loop for maximum effect.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Three songs I'd suggest:

New Divide by Linkin Park
Live to Win by Paul Stanley
Move Along by The All-American Rejects

Any soundtrack that was written by John Williams. I find orchestral music is best to play as background music during a gaming session, as no one is tempted to sing along and get distracted. And well John Williams is one of my favourite modern composers.

Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Particularly the end, the bit most people will recognise.

Here it goes again by OK GO. Try and keep your moves and dice rolls in time with the music! Challenge!

My Name is Lincoln from The Island Soundtrack. Beautiful piece of music. Composed by John Williams (^^ Thaanos mentioned him )

Some old school Metallica could work aswell. Battery? Fade to Black maybe?

Well, Bolt Thrower is my choice for background music. Still, here are some other suggestions, based on music and theme:

Amon Amarth - "In Pursuit of Vikings" (not 40k lyrically, but the music fits)

Nocturnus - "Aquatica" (Nocturnus did mostly sci-fi death metal)

Nocturnus - "Alter Reality"

Nile - "Unas, Slayer of Gods" (part 1)

Nile - "Unas, Slayer of Gods" (part 2)

Sanctuary - "Battle Angels"

Sanctuary - "Die for My Sins"
