Try to destroy BA heroes like Mephiston or Dante.

Join the Imperial Guard. The pay's lousy, the battles fierce and you probably won't ever come back again. BUT you get a lasgun.

Cheaper? BT can take LR's and LRCs as a dedicated transport, but they are actually MORE expensive then other chapter's Land Raiders....

My local metagame is mostly Orks and Eldar, with a CSM player and a BA every now and then. Unfortunately, the Eldar player doesn't use a Seer Bike Council, so I have no idea how to counter them or even what makes them so deadly, all I know about them is that they're dead 'ard and killy.

I basically want to know if there's any "doomsday" units like the council or the Doom that I should know of and try to kill ASAP. Not "dangerous" units, mind you, but rather "if you don't fix these units you can kiss your army goodbai"-level.

Most of the Deathstar units have been mentioned. Odds are you'll recognize them when you see them (ThunderCav, Nobz, Seer Council, TH/SS terms, Swarmlord+guard, etc). Some of the tricks to dealing with them are the same:
1) Shoot them down if possible.
2) If you can't shoot them fast enough, avoid them and try crippling the rest of the army.
3) If that fails, remember to spread your units out!. The only reason units like that work is because they get multiple charges. If you can limit them to hitting one unit at a time then you're well on your way to having them beat.

Honestly, its the well played, flexable, evenly distributed, armies that are the toughest.

For tourneys as a whole, just take it one game at a time. Reboot your brain after each game, and just focus on playing the guy across from you. Don't stress out if you do poorly in the first round, odds are you'll have gentler opponents in the next couple games, so just get a fresh start every game. Bring a couple bottles of water. Bring some Excedrin. Dehydration or stress may give you a headache around the third game (at least it does for me).

Good luck to you, Black Templar can be tough. A buddy of mine got 3rd in 'Ard Boyz prelims with them.

What Dementia said.

cheap Crusader squads can be used as tarpit units. Deathstars hate having to stay in combat for more then 1 turn.

Incidentially the 3rd place guy at my 'Ard Boyz was BT player. I wouldn't happen to know you Dementia, would i?

Against TH/SS termies, just throw volume into them. I have lost many termies from just lots and lots and lots of bolter fire.

Again, the problem is that I'm Black Templars, I don't HAVE that much volume. I guess I could tarpit them to oblivion with a blob of 10 marines and 10 scouts, but anyone who knows how to play will just keep away. Unless they underestimate Righteous Zeal, then I might be golden.

If you don't have volume, then yeah, stay away from them. Pop the LR they are riding in and just avoid them.

BTW, I do know how to play, but because I have some volume of shots I don't have to stay away from them completely!

Didn't mean to insult you, the "anyone who knows what they're doing" thing was referring to the terminator owner keeping away from my tarpit.

NP, just being a hard a**. Let us know how your Templars do. Always interested in how well Loyalist Marines do!
