They even lost a titan! Apparently xeno-tech-heresy ability to invent things is a good thing after all.

That's not surprising with a race that has oodles of railguns. Play Apoc against Tau and see how long your heavies last.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

They loose a single Warhound Titan to a new Tau variant aircraft - but they were already in a bad way having not brought enough sapce ships to secure supply lines or aircraft to control the skies. This coupled with a desert environemnt that favoured both the Tau race and their war machines meant victory was always going to be challenging. It can be imagined that heads rolled due to the handling of the conflict.

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos

"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001

Pretty sure this was on a short term basis.

Pretty much any case of the Imperium working with any Xenos race is on a "short term basis".
