Sorry to go off topic, but where the hell did you Brits get the word bint?

Just curious, because it means girl in Arabic.

I've been wondering about this too. I'm guessing it's not related (I am curious, though), but I thought it was an interesting coincidence when I found out.

Boooring. I saw a video of this online what? 5 years ago? Guy on the streets getting people to sign a petition. What it boils down to is 'look! Some people dont know what the word suffrage means!' and as such, its an old unfunny joke. Not really worth wasting your time with.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

It was picked up at some point during our various governings of Arab speaking countries such as Egypt, Palestine, Iraq and the Gulf States, which occurred during the late 19th century and after the First World War.

Quite a few men's magazines consist of minor celebrities not wearing clothes.

Yep, you basically answered your own question. As KK says, we adopted it in our colonial days. We're so imaginative with our slang

Hah, very interesting. In retrospect I guess it makes sense.

I think a lot of it is down to the differences between specifically male-oriented magazines/tv programs and specifically female-oriented ones. The amount of banal rubbish they consume is mind-blowing. In the average men's publication you can read about narco-terrorism, war, gangland killings, world sport, fashion, grooming... The average woman's mag consists of minor celebrities wearing clothes.

It's worth pointing out that a large proportion of the women I know are graduates (Mrs. Albatross has a degree in psychology! ), yet their viewing and reading habits are shockingly anti-intellectual in outlook.

I've read men's magazines, I think you're being very generous to them.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I decided to test this magazine theory. A quick root around in the magazine rack resulted in me selecting (at random) an issue of Vanity Fair (May 2010). Inside there's a seven and a half page article about General Petraeus.

Our British Depth Study Paper for GCSE History was on women's suffrage...

We had to study that in Chemistry! Also, apparently the a New Zealand MP wrote a letter to the minister of health asking if the ministry had any plans on banning it as a drug.

Emily Davison, died 8th July 1913, after running in front of the King's horse at the Grand National, she also hid in the closet at westminster on census day, so that she could list her place of residence as the Houses of Parliament

Thank you GCSE History.

No, silly HIPPIES being lemmings. Real people don't petition against dihydrogen monoxide.

Did you not see my post? Real people do petition against Dihydrogen Monoxide.

these are taken from Wikipedia:

  • In 2001 a staffer in New Zealand Green Party MP Sue Kedgley's office responded to a request for support for a campaign to ban dihydrogen monoxide by saying she was "absolutely supportive of the campaign to ban this toxic substance". This was criticised in press releases by the National Party, who 6 years later ironically had one of their MP's fall for the very same hoax.

  • In March 2004, Aliso Viejo, California almost considered banning the use of foam containers at city-sponsored events because dihydrogen monoxide is part of their production. A paralegal had asked the city council to put it on the agenda; he later attributed it to poor research.[17] The law was pulled from the agenda before it could come to a vote, but not before the city received a raft of bad publicity.

  • In 2007 Jacqui Dean, New Zealand National Party MP, fell for the hoax, writing a letter to Associate Minister of Health Jim Anderton asking "Does the Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs have a view on the banning of this drug?"

  • the government falls for it as well, not just "hippies".
