Ya basically there's alot of crossover with imperial forces so the want to try to at least give them some different weapons to play with. IG don't have assault cannons either. Apparently you have to replace all the barrels after every battle.

AC may not be very useable for behind the scenes fighting that SM tend to do, and this seems to make the most sense to me, but at the same time LC don't seem to be very useable in that situation as well but SM can field tons of them as well.

not at all, the problem of IG and plasma cannon is the fact that those guns are supossed to be extremely rare and uncommon, not due a lack of knowledge in their maintenance, think about it, you cannot equip in great numbers with a gun that its (supossedly) rare to see, unlike plasma guns and pistols, that are far more common, anyway, sentinel walkers can be armed with plasma cannons too...

Which is more useful in tabletop anyway, because they can move and fire and don't have to suffer gets hot.

True! armored Sentinel is an excelent addition for the IG.... a pack of three sentinels can pack more firepower than a single dreadnought...

i thought plasma cannons were just as rare as plasma pistols and guns so i assumed it was due to complexity since sentinels and Russes can have them

In pre heresy fluff, they would also deploy assault cannons

I actually found the AC to be a nice compliment to a SM Scout Sniper squad. same range, good str, could stop most transports, plus being a H-2 thats 2 chances to pop those transports.
