I stayed when I saw Michael Cain is in it (though he has been in plenty of bad films.)

Anyway I was glad because it picks up again and the last hour is practically a continuous action sequence.

It combines elements of a heist movie, a spy movie, and The Matrix.

i fell asleep during it, which is ironic...

Tried too hard to be better than the Matrix, but instead it felt really forced.

Best movie of the year (so far of course). But I have trouble putting in words why people need to see this.

I've seen Inception three times now, and I am convinced that it's quite a bit more linear and un-mysterious than people give it credit for. Still an awesome movie, though. Christopher Nolan is now my favorite directed. (Sorry, Kubrick.)

I agree warp, it's not nearly as confusing as people suggest. The only issue is understanding the "rules" of the nested dream worlds, and while you think you're confused when they explain it, as you watch it it turns out to be pretty much what one would assume, and fairly straightforward.

What I didn't get is why they just didn't use the "dream bigger" concept. When they were trying to get inside the vault, couldn't they just have, I dunno, imagined RPGs or Jetpacks or something like that?

The dream has to seem plausible to the people within it, so you can't just imagine stuff out of nowhere. Particularly when the target must reveal his own secret subconsciously.

Yep they had to be subtle rather than blunt, I guess.

Spoiler:
But if they wanted to try the Michael Bay way of opening doors then that guy that kidnapped would have to have done it.

I guess the reason was that those doors were pretty much to show how tough the doors are and as it was a dream it was based on what they belived more than reality. Besides it was probably more to build up suspense and to make what it contained seem more important. If that vault could be busted by any RPG it wouldn't really be safe and like they said he was already trained to help boost his defences so they probably assumed only the code could open it anyway

Spoiler:
I think the point is that within the dream the target's secret can only be revealed by himself. Thus, he has to open the safe using the combination that he knows, because logically if it is his own secret inside his own safe, he does not need to blow it open with a rocket.

In this case, there wasn't a real secret of the target in the safe, because it was actually the idea they wanted to implant. To do this they needed to conceal the idea they wanted him to accept as his own, so they had to make it all look like he was uncovering his own secret.

I get that they needed Fisher to open the vault door, but therer were a few moments were a little more firepower would've solved the problem, or did I miss something there?

True, but I guess it was an attempt to make it more grounded and realistic. If they made whatever they wanted whenever they need it there wouldn't really be as much suspense as there wouldn't really be any challenges for them.

Also spoilers show in the preview when you leave your pointer over the link to the thread, so I guess if we want to use spoilers and stop it from showing up, do an extra line or two of non-spoilers before it.

Awesome movie, but very, very loud. (My parents could hear it outside in the street.)
That's pretty much my only complaint.

I thought the zero gravity fight scenes were awesome, especially when Arthur uses the arm triangle to choke the one guy out.

Spoiler:
What they failed to realise was that Fisher as a major international executive would have had anti-dream-extraction training. That is why they were almost hit by a train at the start of the first level -- Fisher's own subconscious defences were much stronger than expected.

However, as the dream team had to work within the parameters of the scenario their architect constructed IRL, they were unable to conjure up more help inside the dream.

I was particularly impressed with Gordon-Levitt's stunt work in those scenes. He really pulled it off cleanly. Apparently it was all done with mobile sets and wires.

Spoiler:
The train part is incorrect, actually. That was Cobb's mind interfering with the dream, remember when he and the architect girl went into his own dream? One of the levels was that same train. That's why Cobb's face was like "Oh gak!" when the train passed, and the girl was like "Stupidass."

I loved the movie, but I wish I would have realized the start was much more important then I thought it was.

Also, I found the Cob and Mol living a whole lifetime in that dream to be mind boggling. I can realize how Cob and Mol were so fethed up, they lived their WHOLE LIFE in a fictional world, and then have to come out of it to live their whole life again, just in shittier world.

Mind-shattering.

Then why even bother showing us that they can create Grenade Launchers out of thin air

Saw it a few days ago and I'm going to side with the "it was amazing!" crowd. Ok, it boils down to The Matrix with dreams meets Mission: Impossible, but it has a stronger story than either of those films.

To talk about the film is to just spoil it for those who haven't seen it (hence the large number of hide spoiler boxes in this thread), but I would say that one of the film's plus points is the exceptional ensemble cast. Yes, Dicaprio is the nominal 'star' of the film, but everyone gets a opportunity to shine (particularly liked Levitt, made fighting in a waistcoat look cooler than the leather and pvc of The Matrix). Nolan is often credited for delivering intriguing complex plots, but one of his true talents is achieving balance with a large number of characters. See also the Batman films.

Spoiler:
A gang of heavily armed kidnappers might have a grenade launcher hidden in their base. That is different to materialising a platoon of troops or a helicopter out of nowhere.

There's a lot of detail in the movie, and a final resolution that is deliberately unclear. I think a lot of people go looking for a final answer and get hung up on a lot of that detail. But I agree, taken straight the movie is fairly clear.

If you want an idea of how many clever ideas are thrown into this movie, check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVkQ0C4qDvM

Incredible.

They weren't trying to get into the vault. They were trying to get Fischer into the vault. He had to enter the vault to and talk to his Dad to gain catharsis from his Dad's death.

Spoiler:
We don't actually know the 'dream bigger' concept allows you to create objects out of nothing. We have a witty line from one character before he fired the thing, that doesn't actually say he created the thing out of thin air - it may have been taken out of the van. Given that no-one else consciously created an object during the movie, and the amount of dialogue based around how the dream world should appear as normal as the real world, I think it's reasonable to conclude you can't consciously create new objects out of thin air - the gear has to be part of the architect's work.

Oh, and the train wasn't part of Fischer's extraction defences. It was put into the dream by Cobb, it was the train he and Mal used to 'escape' limbo. It was created out of thin air, but note that it was created by Cobb's subconscious, not his conscious mind.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
