Experience has shown me otherwise.

My Boyz have cracked a couple of Dreadnoughts and a Carnifex with their paltry S8 BS2 rokkits (out of the three times I've fielded them with my Boyz). I'm keepin'em.

As for the Big Shoota, it's gotten wounds before, but hasn't nearly proven itself as well as the Rokkits. I may remove it.

Staying with 500 pts then with Green Tide:

Big Mek with Kff and Boss pole - 90pts

20 Shoota boys, 2 big shootas, Nob with PK - 165pts

25 Shoota Boys, nob woth PK and boss pole and 2 big shootas - 200.

11 grots with runherd (to hold objective) - 43 pts

total - 498 pts

Pro's of Green Tide:
-So many troops your opponent can't handle them all.
-Tactics not needed -walk forward and shoot, when close enough - assault.

Con's of Green Tide -
-Games take a long time to play since you have to move so many models
-Lots of painting required - In the above list I gave you, there is 57 models to build/paint.
-Game type becomes boring - there are not many options on how to play.

I'll go over Kan Wall but a true Kan Wall won't work well in 500 pts.

Pro's -
-Loads of AV11 Walkers that can shoot great for orks that are covered with a 4+ cover save(KFF)
-Fun army to play - a dcent ballistic skill gives you mroe tactical options.
-Kans allow you to hide your boys behind them - giving the boys a 4+ cover save.
-Many armies can't handle 9 Str 10 DCCW's coming at them.

Con's -
-Can be and expensive army - 9 kans is clsoe to $150 - then you need all the boys behind them

Melee > Dakka

Green Tide is all about melee.

Dakka is nice, but you want those 20 extra attacks from those Sluggas.

This list is looking good. I would say don't make the Lootas into Meks since you have no vehicles to make use of their repair abilities, and you're trading more shots at a slightly lower power for a higher powered gun that explodes in your face if you roll . And with only six models in the squad you can't afford to be killing them yourself.

As far as the HQ goes I would personally trade the warboss for a big mek with a KFF. You don't have a lot of bodies in this list so it would be in your best interest to keep them alive. I have seen that cover save work wonders for a squad of boyz trying to get across open terrain.

Oh, and if you're looking for an inexpensive Warboss, see if you can find someone looking to sell their unused AoBR warboss. It's plastic, snaps together easily, has an awesome pose, and generally looks like a kickass mofo. And has all the wargear yours will, except for his TL shoota, which you can always say is just a regular shoota (or a big ass slugga). TL shoota is a waste of points in my opinion, but others may disagree.

Unfortunately Lootas come five to a box, so you're either gonna need to buy two boxes to make your six-man squad (and waste four models, which is a huge shame) or look for your sixth second-hand. You may even want to head over to TheWarStore.com and get the bitz for a sixth Loota - it won't be super cheap, but it'll be cheaper than buying a second box just for one model.
