Yeah pretty much what most others say - it's a crapshoot. If you like crapshoots, you'll like lootas!

Yeah, I really like lootas. They're a pain in the ass to assemble and paint, so I stopped at 16 of them, which I field as a unit of 15 or two units of 8, depending. Their problem is their vulnerability, at 15 points a model and protection no better than a regular ork they're often enemy number 1, especially because the rest of my army will take a turn or two to be as dangerous as the lootas are from turn one.

Still, getting targetted because you're a such a good unit is a nice problem to have.

I've only used mine once (just recently got them) and I was both so proud and so disappointed in my boyz. First turn shoot them at a Defiler (unit of 4 and 1 mek). Get a 5 on my "how many do I shoot because I'm an ork" roll... so 3 shots a pop. 9 hits. Then proceed to get no glances or pens on AV12 with 9 S7 shots.

You realise you still have to roll to hit, right?

Bigger squads have to take more casualties before their LD drops below 10, and only take up one elite slot.

Smaller squads can split fire, need to be targetted seperately, and are more likely to able to fit into cover.

It's a balance.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Lootas work better in small packages.

Small, annoying packages, but they get the job done. Love them.

Lootas are fantastic. Their only real downside is that they compete for elite slots with burnas and nobs, although you can potentially take two nobs squads as troops.

They are very orky; either firing ineffectively into the air or wiping out whole units at a time.

However, one advantage of random/unpredictable ork shooting is the effect it has on your opponent. Your opponent may well view your forces in terms of what they will do at their most powerful. So, 5 lootas are capable of 15 S7 shots; they will attract a lot of fire for a 75pt unit.

The same is true of flash gitz who, whilst more costly, have more wounds and can take a painboy. My SM opponent doesn't view my flash gitz as I do (an underpowered shooting unit that's handy in CC); he sees something with the potential to put out 10 (more dakka) S5 AP2 shots, and kill off a few terminators in one go.

And whilst your opponent is trying to get your lootas and flash gitz from behind their cover, your boyz are getting closer. If your opponent is canny and ignores the shooters, you get reasonable supporting fire.

my problem came when i fielded 15 in a squad, without a mek but in good cover. my opponent blasted them to hell with tanks by turn 2, i wont field more than 10 just because they are a very shiny target and the more the shinier i guess, thats my luck though

Orks is never beat in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die so it don't count as beat. If we runs for it we don't die neither, so we can always come back for anuvver go, see!

You should put them in separate locations my friend.
