I am accustomed to playing with mature young players (ages 15-19) on the mmo... but I could always mute them if they bugged me. Problem with playing a game in person is there is no mute button

Gee, judging by your posts, I never would have guessed.
Also judging by your posts, it's perfectly fair.

I've seen one female player at the LGS. Her and her bf are the most annoying people in the store. They always butt into everyone's games and touch all your models. Then they interupt your game to talk about stupid stuff nobody cares about. I hate my LGS, its filled with manchildren, but ironicly there are no very young players. Though the mature adults there are pretty cool, if a bit snobby sometimes... well some of them.

That right there is an outright invitation to have her and her boyfriend's asses kicked.
I'd be sorely tempted to teach them some goddamn manners. The hard way.

As previously mentioned, I am, in fact, a girl.
I play Chaos Space Marines. Not Sisters of Battle, or Eldar. Though I did consider Dark Eldar as a 'practice' army, but I wasn't able to find any models at my LGS, much less a codex.
And I have actually entered a gaming store without my fiance (who got me into 40k) with me. I brought my mom and, another time, my older sister. And I may have gotten a friend of mine (female) into playing 40k as well. She likes the look of Eldar, but I think she'll go with something simpler to put together once she glues her hands together (again).
I'm still not quite comfortable entering my FLGS by myself though, because it's not in the best of neighborhoods, and while its proximity to my university means that I'll recognize a lot of the people there (from D&D or Way of the Sword, my other nerdy hobbies) that doesn't make it much better. So I'll probably have a friend or relative or two with me whenever I go, especially since I don't like driving by myself. lol

Maybe I'm odd, but I've met dozens of girls/women that play. Our club has had at least a half-dozen cycle through over the past few years. Course, I did meet many of them while travelling to large events, so I suppose that might skew the nuymbers.

I have never seen a female 40k player but gender is not an issue with me i simply get on with thing's. It is people like Feugan and SaintHazard who are going to begin the stagnation of 40k's players. Some young people are immature but some are not, like me i am probably the most mature kid in my second year class i will laugh and have a good time while playing but i wont go crazy.

I wonder if GW could increase its female following by giving them more character based games ie Inquisitor, Dark Heresy or WHFR. It makes me think because with my cosplay group the only games the girls really like are rpg's (and portal for some reason, i guess it struck a chord).
Hell, even Necromunda had more character in it then 40k and as much as I love my 40k, it is about the strategy, not the character.

Many games appear to outsiders at least as "boys clubs". And I personally think women are more likely to play a video game or mmo than 40k, for example, since no one has to know you are a girl and thus invading the boys club.
As for the idea of altering the game towards being more character based - I think that angle is interesting. Although I believe painting your army with a unique theme and/or naming it provides a similar connection to the game.

Raging Ravener

I know precisely one girl who plays 40K - my sister, and by "play" I'm straining the word to its definable limits since she has yet to memorise any of her units stats or abilities or most of the games rules for that matter. This despite having been gaming for close on 5 years, and playing Necrons, not exactly the most complex army to run. Most of the time it turns it a complex battle against yourself as you continuously instruct her on unit tactics, movement, shooting, etc. All this while being 28 years old, I guess some people just never learn.
That said, if anyone, man or woman, played like that it would be frustrating I guarantee it. On topic though, as I said above, I know only one girl who plays 40K, but did once bump into a girl at random who asked me where I'd just bought a bunch of models from and was knowledgeable enough that I can assume she was a player.
Based on my experience, I'd have to say the ratio of guys to girls is somewhat drastically skewed in favour of the guys, which is a shame really, cause when I've played girls at other games they tend to have a different mindset to most guys and you have to be a bit more on your toes about stuff you just don't expect.

I've met/seen a few. Only 1 actually played SoB, although her main army was Dark Eldar. The rest were mostly Orks, Daemons (the slannesh models make conversations awkward) or vanilla SM.
|
Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

There are a couple who frequent my FLGS. They play occasionally, but I think it's only b/c their boyfriends play too. I don't know them pretty well, and the one time I was going to play one of them in a Map Campaign, she had to cancel (twice on two different occasions) on me.
I'm sure there are more out there, just depends on where you're from, I think.
