my current list is actually 2999. [As it turned out, I don't know my own point costs.]

You can *ALWAYS* remove a piece of wargear... there is no valid reason to ask your opponent to 'let it slide' when you should just remove a piece of wargear.

Unless you're 100% WYSIWYG. Then it might be harder as you are constrained by the models. I'll usually let a few points slide because of that and my regular opponents usually do the same for me. Personally, I'd rather give an opponent a few points then have the "this powerfist isn't really a powerfist but the other powerfists are" nonsense.

If it's like 3 points, get rid of a storm bolter.
5 points get rid of a meltabomb.

it's not so smart otherwise. sometimes it's something else - a plasma pistol maybe.

Now before the inquisition gets a hold of me let me give you a good reason why this is. When we play friendly games were usually trying out different lists with configurations we're not sure about, or even using new untested armies all together. Our freindly games are test drives for the units we're trying out and as such trimming a unit down doesn't show us how that unit performs and won't tell us if that unit would work well in our "ideal" lists.

Now if I'm in a tourny then darned right I'm sticking to the limit, and as well if my play group wanted to do a tourny or a campaign than I would say stick to the limit too.

This seems like a bad idea to me, not because of a TFG situation, but because you are learning to use a list incorrectly. Then, if you liked it, and want to use it in a tourney or some such, you are used to using the list that is a friendly amount over, and don't know where to make the cuts for the points, where if you used the army at the correct total, you would have already made the point cuts, and tried it out.
If we were trying out complete lists this makes sense, however we're trying out individual units as we are still learning the game it is less important in our freindly games to have a perfectly built list and more important to learn how to use the individual units properly. I agree if we did a tourny or campaign within my play group I would absolutely stick to the points restrictions, no question.
