ok just as long as it has one thing. chaos wins just to give people the idea that 40k is a grim fething place and not a sciance ficton lord of the rings.

I think a movie in theaters would be great! It would get more players. But thats just me.

In 3d, no. 2D cinema experience. For sure.

Yeah, I'd rather spend cash on ticket and snax and see it on a big screen with nice dolby surround sound rather than having to spend what 30/40 thousand dollars on entertainment equipment which I wouldn't use 3 quarters of the time. Then you've got the potential for ADVERTISING, for reviews in the media. For people to actually go HEY look at that space marine movie, its cool. Instore releases won't actually get any more people involved in the game, other than who already play 40K or GW games.

And yes, you heard it. Its GW store releases, not even from target or anything like that. It needs to be sold OUT in mainstream media. so that attention is paid to it.

Its one of the main rules of movie releases and GW has just shot itself in the foot in regards to advertising 40K with the Ultramarine movie.

My 46" flatscreen cost me $1100 brand new. I don't have an entertainment system - I use the built-in speakers and play all my DVDs on my Xbox 360 or my PS3.

If you total up the cost of my "entertainment equipment," it comes out to around $1400, which is about a hundred theater visits.

Also I use it daily.

Hey if I have to crane my neck to see part of the picture, the screen is too goddamn big. I don't pay good money to have neck cramps, thanks.

lol. I like/hate on a 50/50 basis the stuff John Blanche makes. And SaintHazard, if you need to crane you neck to see the movie, take a seat farther back in the theater.

Online petitions always work! Just ask all the Firefly fans what they thought about that giant sequel to "Serenity" that Fox released last February! You know, the thing Fox did to finally make the fans shut up!

Theres a sequel?!?!

SaintHazard - I pretty much agree with you on everything you have said on this thread. God I hate the theater experience. Loud ass people, stale popcorn, bad service, and YES a stiff neck. And given the theater, sometimes my ass/back just KILLS me after the flick is done. Screw that, Ill sit at home and enjoy my self thanks lol

But I have to say, I have seen some of Blanches work, and I really dig alot of it. He could make a pretty trippy movie if he wanted.

I think John Blanche's artwork captures the look of Warhammer and it's 40k companion well, it's grim, distinct, unique, exotic, has exaggeration and a scale of grandeur/magnificence just like the table-top games.

LOL, IDK about you, but I tend not to watch movies or TV all that often, different type of person. If people don't have good equipment to view the fething movie, then a lot of the impact is going to be lost. big screen releases show a lot more of the detail, plus the advertising for the movie and the game. Feth. Imagine seeing the trailer on the website now in a cinema, that'd ROCK. If you want good sound etc, I'd rather go to a cinema, see it in action on a big screen.

Hell, If its a purely DVD release I'll go to my friends house who has a gacking huge screen TV, and a full surround sound system. Watch it there. He's an ork fan.

I like going to the cinema I enjoy the big screen, the popcorn, the pop, the friends/family I go with and the surround sound, it would be an awesome experience to see a warhammer film in theaters.

If a 40k film is limited to the setting's preexisting audience, you're making the wrong film. With about a dozen major power bases to choose from, each with their own forces, the 40k canon is large enough that you could pick the bits most likely to appeal to a general audience.

I think not wanting a 40k movie in the theaters just because you hate movie theater is rediculous. If it was in an actual theater it would be better quality and it would expose more people to the game. Could you imagin if they had it in IMAX, people would weep tears of blood and wail in unholy extacy at the shear AWSOMENESS.

There's nothing to suggest it would be better quality. Can you name a good movie that's based on a game?

I can name a good movie that's based on a theme park ride. If the 40k setting is good enough to get books onto the NYT bestsellers list, I think it's good enough to form the basis of a movie.

Totally agree, but if something like Halo/hobbit is not worth funding even after they have started production, a warhammer 40k big budget blockbuster isn't gonna get that money either.

Its probably a hard pill to swallow for most people that are fans (myself included) but investors wont invest on a gambit that the movie may succeed. I have seen it first hand on several productions I had hoped to work on here. It has to have projected profitability... While we all love the 40k universe, it is barely known outside of an LGS, and a few RTS players. Cant go viral marketing like Inception, D9 and cloverfield... too much is already known about what the movie would be about.

Starters its sci fi and involves war and religion... cuts a reasonable part of the investor market out straight away, then due to censorship laws gets an m15 (or equivalent) rating due to violence and bloodshed (imo it wouldn't be the 40k universe without these 2 things) which cuts out any sub 15 year old gamer. The only thing that will get women through the door would be if they are a fan or any draw the star power (casting) has... now look at the cost to make such a film, we are talking hundreds of millions... do you think a 10,000 strong petition is going to raise that kinda money? At roughly 20nzd a head presuming everyone is seeing the film and not downloading it that's a whopping 200,000. Remove merch rights from the package, GW wont buy into that... and its not so appealing for an investor. To an investor that is indeed a niche market I'm afraid.

This is why we will be shortly seeing several space opera type productions which have wider appeal, and thus wider marketability. At the end of the day investors want a return for their money... Firefly was mentioned a few posts back and that is a good example.

The best that could be hoped for is the animated movie having a few cult screenings on the big screen. Never know, maybe the animated movie may bring a whole new demographic into following the 40k universe, maybe it will be watered down enough for general consumption...

The problems Hobbit has gone through in production have nothing to do with funding. MGM thought Peter Jackson was the best man for the job - GW already has the best man for the job writing the script for the Ultramarines movie. The Tolkien estate was refusing to hand over the rights to make the movie - GW would profit immensely from the additional exposure even if they didn't receive any direct revenue, and have no reason to stonewall like this.

Right, because military sci-fi is such an unpopular genre. There's no way a war movie featuring hundred metre tall walking weapons platforms could appeal to Joe Everyman.

Yeah I might know a thing or two about that hobbit not happening. Currently it is because Del toro could not commit to the amount of time, he is committed to finishing the script though. PJ has too much on his plate to direct it, hopefully he will re-shuffle. Funding is uneasy because of all the set backs, but as far as I know the 2 production companies had reached an agreement.

Alex, do you work in film too? Just curious, might know you.
