Can't remember the last time I actually went to a theater. Why bother paying $7 for a ticket and another $15 for food to go see an unpausable movie on a too-large screen surrounded by a bunch of idiots who like to pull out their cell phones and light up the theater every five minutes, when I can just sit at home with a beer and some snack mix and watch a movie on my 46" flatscreen in peace?

Straight-to-DVD releases are my favorite thing.

A critically acclaimed movie, a movie that's heavily marketed, a movie that sells well in the box office, these are things that get media attention.

On the other hand, there are dozens of movies that come out every year that get zero media attention even though they do hit the box office.

It's all about what the movie makers are willing to pay for, not whether or not it goes to theaters.

Do we really want it to have media attention? thats not a good thing.

you'll get more stupid players for the game, they will push the price of space marines up and people will end up paying more overall.

Then, you'll get people here saying:
"oh, but space marines aren't like that in the movie."

You didn't like it with DOW? wait until it starts for the movie.

Second, more players is a good thing. We want attention drawn to this hobby so it keeps going strong. I'm sick of not being able to find a damn game in the 29th largest city in the US. I was ecstatic that this last weekend when I taught two brand new players how to play the game and suggested products to buy to start up the hobby.

Finally, Dan Abnett is a great writer. Would you rather the script be written by C.S. Goto? Why don't we just have John Blanche as the art director?

I love a bit of Blanche I do; and even Abnetts' writing is decidedly sub par. I don't think I've ever seen a genuinely well written Black Library book.

The movie will actually just be about a cosplayer that wants to buy AoBR for his son on christmas eve, but can't because all the stores are sold out...

Edit: Seriously though, I'm looking forward to the movie even if it will be along the lines of:
"Ultramarines are winning, but then they almost lose because Captain Awesome dies, but then its okay, cos Lt Slightly Less Awesome believes in the Big E lots, and paints his armor extra blue, so the ultramrines win again1!!!!11!!"

I don't think GW wanted to risk the extra money on a wide release, but I can almost guarantee there will be Limited Edition Blu-Ray edition that comes with super rare captain Awesome models, only $67.99!!!

If I'm going to pay $20+ to see a movie, it better be a damned good movie.

This does not have the makings of a damned good movie. I'd be surprised if it had the makings of a slightly decent movie in it.

OP: You do realise what it costs to release a movie into cinemas as opposed to a dvd release?

It costs a crapload more - and it is not guaranteed to make that money back, let alone a profit. And an IMAX print or 3D rendering of it, costs even more. Unless you were willing to front up the difference from your own pocket?

DVD releases are soooo much cheaper.

On the other hand, a cinematic release of it would probably bankrupt GW and that would be a good thing.

Without GW, there wouldn't be as many haters hating on the interwebs.

Being a VFX artist I can honestly say, the amount of resource (money and time) rendering this for big screen, let alone Imax or re rendered into stereoscopic 3d is just not profitable for a film with such a niche market.

I will be happy with it on disk and my big screen.
