I'm pretty sure the UK has it's fair share of ignorance, just not that "I live in michegan/Iowa/somewhere in the mid-west and I watch fox news because I trust what they tell me and I've never talked to anyone who isn't white, so they must be heathens if they aren't" sort of ignorance...

Actually the "Don't know," category should be properly labeled, "Don't know and/or Don't care." I proudly fall into that category.
Remember this is also roughly the percentage of people who believe the moon landing was faked so take it with a grain of salt.

Bush was riding on 9/11 at this point in his presidency. Obama is still doing better than a majority of his second term and vastly better then towards the end of it. Bush didn't really have to deal with much, he made his own problems (aside from katrina). Obamas getting blamed for the reds inability to understand economic instability and for his attempt at killing everyones grandparents according to fox.
Approval rates directly correspond to American confidence in the nations course. During bad times they go down, no matter how little the president has to do with it or how its actually going.

I'm pretty sure they had to change the rules in order to let the Terminator rule California, so I would imagine a similar thing would need to occur in order for a "non-American" (ie someone who was not born in America) to run for President.
Nope, there's no provision in the California constitution requiring the Governor to be a natural born citizen of the United States, so no law needed to be passed to allow Arnie to run.
There is also nothing to stop a non-citizen of the United States from running for office, or even being elected. However the law prohibits a non-citizen from holding certain public offices, like POTUS, and thus if a non-natural citizen (or someone under the age of 35) ran for President and won they could be barred from office. So the contention of the Birthers is that Obama was elected to office but is not legally qualified to hold that office, and thus needs to be removed from office.
So to summarize: There is no American law that prohibits an 12 year old from the Czech Republic from running for President, but the US Constitution prohibits that Czech child from holding certain offices.

Grignard wrote:Anyone who thinks there is a conspiracy by the government to create a socialist America must be an idiot, but there definitely is a conspiracy by "mega corporations" to control politicians?
Can it really be called a "conspiracy" when it's so out in the open? I mean it's not like the billions of dollars in lobbyists and the billions of dollars in campaign donations are a secret. Nor do I believe that anyone thinks that these corporations give money to politicians or lobbyists without a firm belief that they will get a return on this investment in some form.
To claim that there is a conspiracy by the government to create a socialist America first demands a definition for socialism, which is tricky enough. But then it requires some kind of proof and evidence. Given that the people who claim such a conspiracy exists tend to point to Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union as examples of socialism, the claim that there is a conspiracy by the government to create a socialist America does appear fairly idiotic. Fears of a government take-over of all industry and the banks seem extremely misplaced. If the Obama administration was interested in nationalizing all industry, one would think that the bailouts of 2009 would have been the time to strike -- instead we see the banks have paid back most of the TARP funds and GM is well on its way to paying back the government.
So it does seem fairly reasonable to assert that believing in a socialist conspiracy to undermine American capitalism is pretty silly, while believing that American corporations exert unreasonable influence on the US government seems to be a reasonable position in light of the actual facts.
---------------
Obama would be getting a far more favorable rating if Fox News were not the most watched news outlet in America. The reality is that Fox News, which just gave a million dollars to the Republicans, is a de facto wing of the Republican party, and runs anti-Obama propaganda almost 24/7. It's really one of the most disturbing challenges to free speech and free press we've ever seen. Fox News essentially amounts to hundreds of hours of free political advertisement for the Republicans, a 24/7 attack ad they don't have to pay for -- but really, at some point the question needs to be asked: Is Fox News violating campaign donation laws by giving the GOP such partisan coverage? No president in American history has been forced to deal with a so boldly partisan 5th estate.
Many, many people who oppose Obama do so only because they are so completely and grievously misinformed by Fox News.

Ah but did he not take the citizenship test or something? You can become a citizen even if you were not born in the country if you have lived in the states a certain amount of time and can prove you know about american history and culture. Well thats what the Simpsons has taught me, so i could be way off the mark however.
The rules to be a governor are different than that for being the president and can vary by state.

Things like that, is what made Jay Leno famous. Infact, that news reporter just stole his act. You interview a gak load of people and take the DUMBEST answers and pile them together in a 4 minute segment. That can be done with any country, anywhere in the world. Sure our country is many times larger then most, so its easier to find idiots in crowds. That doesnt make America full of dumb people. That really was just insulting. But OT, I personally dont care what Obamas religious views are. I still dont like the guys policies. I think the people that think hes not even from this country are just insane. He CANT be the president, period. But again as posted above, Im sure there are people just like that in every country.

I agree: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0510/36783.html
It's really one of the most disturbing challenges to free speech and free press we've ever seen.
You have an odd ability to serve as a shill for the dominant ideology, and yet constantly buttress your points with appeals to freedom, liberty, etc.
Fox is a disturbing challenge to free speech? You sure?
How about the "Fairness Doctrine?" Not only a much greater threat to free speech, but also couched in the same sort of false-language that you are such a fan of.
Fox is not a challenge to free speech. It's just the right-wing version of MSNBC. The reason it has such a huge following is because there is no right-wing version of CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC, so right-wingers have only one place to go.
All of these news organizations are a challenge to useful, educated thought, but none of them is challenging free speech.
Progress!
I saw it reported that 25% of Americans thought 9-11 was an inside job. So, indeed, progress.

Phryxis wrote:Fox is a disturbing challenge to free speech? You sure?
Yes. When the Founders first asserted the right to a free press and free speech, they could have hardly envisioned the possibility of the rise of Fox News. Here we have a "news organization" that has defended its right to lie in court, has given money exclusively to one party, which has supported and encouraged a anti-government movement, and which broadcasts propaganda 24/7.
It is damaging to our democracy. Democracy, more than anything, relies on the free exchange of ideas. There needs to be honest and reasoned discussion of policies, priorities and agendas. But we cannot have that kind of conversation in this country anymore, because the right-wing has turned every single issue into one of partisan attack politics, and Fox News has played a huge role in disinforming the general public and stiffling honest debate.
How about the "Fairness Doctrine?" Not only a much greater threat to free speech, but also couched in the same sort of false-language that you are such a fan of.
I don't see the Fairness Doctrine as any sort of threat to free speech. The Fairness Doctrine is only a threat to professional liars and con-artists who fear being challenged by facts. I am not at all surprised that people like Limbaugh and Beck rail against it, as nothing would be more harmful to their success than being fact-checked.
Fox is not a challenge to free speech. It's just the right-wing version of MSNBC. The reason it has such a huge following is because there is no right-wing version of CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC, so right-wingers have only one place to go.
Fox News is not the right wing version of MSNBC, because MSNBC is not a partisan Democrat operation. MSNBC is highly critical of the Obama administration and the Democratic party in general. Keith Olbermann called the Democrats the "amateur left" only a few days ago, and Rachel Maddow's coverage of Iraq and Afghanistan has been highly critical. MSNBC has not given a million dollars to the GOP, as Fox News has. MSNBC has not created an astro-turf movement out of paranoid, anti-government hysteria and white resentment, while Fox News essentially created the Tea Party movement.
At least you can acknowledge that Fox News is successful because it does not offer actual news, but rather promotes an ideological worldview based on the rejection of fact and objectivity.

The news is actually fine.
I think what you are referring to is the Opinion programming that happens during Prime Time. Also, Shepard Smith is far from a right-wing extremist, but then you'd know that if you ever bothered finding facts out for yourself instead of believing whatever you're told that you happen to want to believe.
