All your fudge are belong to me!!!!

Hellguns are designed for their higher setting. Thats why they don't overheat just like multilasers and lascannons don't overheat.

Plus there are no (or few) moving parts on a laser beam.
Thats why you can put one on a freaking shark!.

gonna straight up copy and paste this from my "most badass IG thread":

Continuing reading The seige of Vraks and it gets quite in depth on hell-guns. Which I though was interesting. They are the Kreig Grenieder variant of course but I imagine Kasirkin ones are pretty similiar.

Hell-guns and "Hotshot" lasguns are the same thing but Hellgun is the prefered term for most troopers. That backpack-powerpack only provides 200 shots. They are very high maintentance and the barrels often warp under the intense heat especially when rapid firing. So the barrels are actually refrigerated! The foregrip is actually there to protect the guardsman's hand from freezing. Between firing the barrel can sometimes frost over.

They are actually not well liked by most guardsmen who actually prefer the more reliable lasgun! However use of them is mandatory for stormtroopers.

Technically speaking no, hellguns and hotshot lasguns aren't really the same thing. A hotshot lasgun is just a lasgun with a hotshot power pack. A hellgun is an advanced, more powerful lasgun.

You usually ask for citations. I have one, now you go.

You're right, my bad. Dark Heresy and supplements. there's a few kinds of laspacks, including overcharged and hotshot, and each lasgun can use them. Hellguns can even use standard laspacks, though they go through them about twice as fast. Hellgun refers to the specific kind of weapon.

Mind you, the two sources may not actually be referring to the same things anyway. A "hot shot lasgun" might indeed be referring to a hellgun, but there ARE laspacks that produce the same effect in normal lasguns. I know a hotshot laspack was used in the gaunt's ghosts series, too, and it wasn't used on a hellgun.

Yes, Hotshot powerpacks are used for sniper rifles. Anyways, its a big galaxy and I'm sure there's a lot of overlap. In real life, calibres are super confusing too with the same number meaning different things at different times and in different countries.

Calibers don't even mean anything in the SAME country. A .45 caliber handgun bullet (from the M1911, in WWII) isn't as deadly as a .30 cal HMG bullet (same country, same time period, same war).

Yes, that's why when they say a bolter is .75 calibre I wonder how big that really is.

Whats a 30 HMG bullet?

You're right but here's an even better one for you. A .300 is much more lethal than a .308 which is less lethal than a .308 (30-06).
A .223 is used by the military but a .22 LR is used by kids (in the immortal words of Genghis Connie: "Nailed It!") while a .22 short is used by gangsters.

.30-06 Springfield. It was used by the browning machinegun in WWII.

...alrighty then. Yes, I can't get my head around calibres at all. I guess you need to be a gun enthusiast to get it or at least American.

Caliber is nothing more than a measurement of the diameter of the bullet. IT does not measure length, have any kind of design considerations, and so on. 1 caliber is an inch. So .50 cal is half an inch in diameter.

A boltgun shell is .75 caliber, which is roughly equivalent to a standard shotgun shell in size (assuming it's 10 to 12 gauge). We don't know its exact length, its design considerations have varied somewhat over the decades (based on which author was writing, of course), we don't know everything about the materials its made up of (or even what all the materials are exactly), and so on.

To bring it back on topic, we know even less about lasguns. The power pack is just that, a power pack, a standard lasgun power pack (or multiple) can be used as a power source for standard Imperial equipment.

Ah you mean .308 which is different from the other .308 which is itself just slightly different from a 7.62 NATO (headspace wise-have to watch it).

And thus your statement on calibers is fully supported.

Just to be annoying: .45 ACP (automatic Colt Pistol) is different than .45 GAP (Glock Automatic Pistol) which is different than .45 long Colt, which itself has about 4 different power levels, depending on what gun you're shooting through. All of them are wholly different than a 45-70 and which is more appropriate to buffalo, but excellent in case you're attacked by large Pokemon.

45-70 shoots a BIG bullet. Marines would like it.

Unless you have really tiny hands? No.

.75 caliber is a bullet which is 3/4ths of an inch thick in diameter.
1.0 caliber is a bullet which is an inch thick in diameter.

And I sincerely doubt heavy bolter rounds are 100 inches in diameter (psst, that's over 8 feet thick, making them bigger than an Astartes in full power armor).

Didn't the hotshot rounds change from 20 shots per clip to single clip because of the differing planetary environments? That's what I assumed when reading the books. That or they were just "turned up" and made stronger for different missions.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...
