I do think that comment was a little over the line. However the investment can be a great incentive for people to put some real effort into their armies. If there's no cost at all, you often have people sign up then drop out last minute because they have nothing invested.
Having managed a comic store, totally understand what you mean. I just hate the elitism that crops up 'round these parts, like how certain missions for tournaments are considered unbalanced only because they hurt "good" players too much. Seems to me that the good players are the ones who win, but I'm going off topic. :p

I like trophies, but I would want a conventional prize like Store Credit to go along with it, even if it meant the trophy was not very large. I love the coins you get from Privateer Press events for example.

Which apparently my local store is doing now...
Yeah, why would anyone want to copy the system used by the most successful tournament in the Western Hemisphere......
No offense man, but have you been to Adepticon? That tournament is fantastic. I would love to see local tournaments run like that as it is the best tournament I have been to, and I have been a to a lot of them.
A trophy is cool, especially with an inquisitor model and especially is said model is actually painted and not just dry brushed gold, silver or bronze, or whatever.
Still, I wouldn't display it, personally. I don't display any of my trophies, plaques, etc. I would rather add more models to my collection as I am ALWAYS working on yet another army or expansion to an existing army.
Damn poor folks, cluttering up our streets and clogging our tournaments with extra entries. They've no right!
Hahaha, and yes, those wretched poor folks, why can't they do us all a favor and just lay down in the gutter and die!

I wouldnt mind a trophy instead of prize money.
Infact, i would prefer it.
When ever money comes into games, cheating follows soon after.
With a trophy as top prize i see the temptation for people to cheat as far less, thus, making it a better tournament as a whole.

Money may bring out more cheating, but honestly, the (very) few times I have seen cheating occur in a tournament, it wasn't about the prize. It was about the guy NEEDING to win the game. Like having a psychological need. I think those cheaters I have seen would have cheated even if there were no prize, just bragging rights.
Most of the prizes at regular tournaments amount to at most a $60 box set for first place. Ard Boyz third place was a blister! At big events you'll get over $100 worth. That really isn't worth risking your reputation over. If it were a big prize, like say at Adepticon, maybe it would entice a non-cheater to cross the line, but who knows.

Reecius: I was just thinking that if the temptation was there, some may take it.
I guess they do even without a prize 0_o
What a sad life it must be for some.

Yeah, no kidding. Cheating in 40K is so lame. You have to be low on things that make you feel good about yourself to pull some gak like that.

Let's not forget the appeal of cheating. Some people think it's fun all on it's own. I can't say I'd disagree, but I don't do it without very specific cause and only to those who acquire my true personal ire (not saying it makes it right, but it does make it more funny and makes a better story later). I've never done it in a tournament, that's for certain. As an example I had a friend who was notoriously bad at math when making army lists and would frequently be 100-200 points over. He actually didn't count the cost of wargear on HQs for a while since it said they could have however many points of gear. I got revenge one game by taking 1000ish extra points by the end and just not mentioning it. He didn't notice because I was throwing in Lesser Daemons who didn't occupy a force org slot and just kept making lots of reserve rolls every turn, recycling units that had been destroyed already XD When I tabled him and he was flabbergasted I revealed my secret and we both had a good laugh then he bought me a beer.
