I know the rules pretty darn well. I don't know everyone elses' codex perfectly, so its always a case of spectator questioning opponent's move. 2. If someone butts in asking about one of my codex rules, I say "Blah blah blah is the rule, you can borrow my codex to look it up if you like. 3. Most importantly, if someone butts in to make an unasked for rules call and they're wrong....I'll say, "You're mistaken on the rule. (Or I'll say, "I'm pretty sure you're mistaken on the rule.) I don't want to interrupt our game because I'm pretty sure that I'm right, but here's the rulebook - find the relevant section and if you prove me wrong we'll sort it out."
Almost word for word my reponse, regularly. +1 Dashofpepper I am asked (unrelated) questions while playing more often about 20:1.

I've never experienced back-seat gamers, but one time we were playing a game, and some random guy gets up from painting, walks over, gives a 10-minute cheesy speech about our "the mighty Blood angels and the strong Chaos Space Marines fighting to the death" while we tried to actually play the game. Every time we'd say something (like "Ok, I made 2 wounds..."), he'd immediately raise his voice over us and continue. Then he finished his speech went back to the painting table and sat down to paint like nothing happened. My opponent and I stood there with "wtf?" faces.
Really, if someone acts as a rules encyclopedia, only gives rules if asked, and we all agree he knows his stuff, it's fine. There's a guy at my GW like that who makes games run a LOT smoother since we didn't have to flip through our rulebook every few minutes.

My group is pretty friendly, and we've made mistakes in the past. We'll make similar mistakes in the future. We play a lot of campaigns. Usually, all-against-all.
1. We never give tactical advice. That's BS and holds true for every game from Pokimon to tiddly winks. If you aren't playing, you should not influence the game with strategic advice. STFU!
2. If someone makes a rules flub, we don't have a problem with someone pointing it out. Again, we've all known each other for years and are all grown-ups (despite playing with man-dollies). We each want to win, but want to win fairly. If I feth up, tell me. Better yet, go look up the rule while we're playing and then show me.
3. Generally, it doesn't go like #2. Generally, it's "Hey, third person. Look up the rule on blah-blah for me, please. Thanks!"

I did, once, step into the role of annoying guy-not=playing a bit, but that was because I was watching a game at a GW store (In Potomac Mills,Ii think) and some guy was using his Chaos to trash a friend who was playing Tyranids. The Tyranid player was new to the game... his army belonged tot he Chaos player inf act, and the Chaos player seemed to be trying to get a win without understanding that if you teach a friend the game and he likes it, you can play more games.
The Tyranid player was constantly being told wrong versions of the rules, or told after decisions were made, etc.
I don't feel too bad about that behavior, although i would feel bad about many of the situations above.

While playing a tournament at the flgs, my friend was up against a Tau player and doing quite well. Since this was just in a GW store, there was a kid who came up to the table, looked at the depleted Tau army and said "don't worry I'll put mine on your side and help you win." Both players had to tell the kid that it was a tournament game and to please feth off.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen? It seems that younger players new to the game will try and do this because at almost every GW store near me, if they are running a game for entertainment purposes, they will ask you if you want to join in, so kids think that you can do this in every game.

JAJA!! i knew few of these guys.... in our FLGS we had, IMO, three of these gakers, first was one called Salas, a pretty fethard who apart of showin an astonishing lack of sense of humor, lack of good behaviour, lack of diplamacy, lack lack lack... well, a hatefull guy, he was that kind of guy that.... "you're dumb" "this is not the way to play with it"(i remember this one for my assault IW list ) "you don't have fething idea of the rules" etc etc etc... a true example of manners...(sarcasm) , as far as i know he quitted from coming to the FLGS, he knew how we despised him.... with reason..
Another one was a guy who was always arguing for the rules, an astonishin knowledge of the rules i must say, well, if he saw some infringement of rules he told it with his characteristic DEEP BOOMING VOICE, we knew him, and we forgive him, because he had always reason, if you had some doubt of rules you can ask to him... the problem comes when some people of the FLGS start discussing to him... no matter that a battle is going on he start to discuss to other ones with his DEEP BOOMING VOICE... making follow the match really hard, concentration flees as seem to like a psyker its taking out your mind... otherwise a good guy,but annoying... he became trapped by a MMORPG and have been seen few times last years....
and last, the "Russian" as someone called it ( FLGS owner is a fething fascist) or as we called it "the sinister guy". FLGS in back times were also a ciber-coffe, as gaming store, well, computers were in a underground (named "the bunker") and had a low ilumination, well that guy passed his time "marauding" all the shop, up and down, and you know that sensation when youre making somethind in your computer that you feel a "presence" really close behind you? well, he didn't leave until you say, CAN I KNOW WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING HERE!!!?? an then, without a single word, leaves. Well, few months later he took some confidence with the usual players, and started to ask, tell, or anything, the problems is... he don't stop, no matter you have to leave, to attend something important etc etc etc, he follows you like a fething shadow and still talking no matter if you're listening, becoming an annoying chatter around you, and he still had the bad habit of placing behind you without say nothing and checking what are you doing, and even talking in a way that seemed your own conscience, that guy annoyed a lot of people, owner included, and one day (i wasn't there, they told me) the owner said "well, we gonna show how democracy works.... Who wants to see the "russian" banned from here? " and all people voted for his bane...

I'm always amused when people try to backseat game, I'm a proficient daemon player, and no one's advice has made an difference to me or y opponent in a game.
I will admit when watching games if somone is abusing the rules (intentionally of not) i'll suggest looking at the book, but tacticaly leave it well alone

It bugs me when I'm playing someone and if they've made or are going to make a tactical choice (they've been studying the table for 5 minutes and are about to move) and someone goes 'oh do XYZ' and they do it. WHY ?
Firstly it wasn't the move they were going to make, so the 2nd party is interefering, of course my opponent is entitled to change their mind however what annoys me is the 2 vs 1 situation. Who am I playing? My opponent or his friend?
