Yay Space Wolves on Land Wolves now if only we could get flying Wolves and Wolves that can carry lots of people at once and we'd be all set to get rid of vehicles in general... i'm a teensy bit bored of Thunderwolves if i'm honest but they are good but i prefer them in the fluff.

I'll be honest, durability aside, how do TWC kill? They seem to rely a lot on rending, with the general concensus(sp?) being that rending is not exactly great. The way I see it, every two TWC will inflict a rending wound, with three normal wounds. I fail to see how that is anything ground-breaking. Though the S10 Thunder hammer they can bring is very nice.

Well, they have a whole lot of str 5 attacks on the charge, often with at least 4 (5 on the charge) str 10 attacks as well. They're damned deadly.

Well...
Let's look at the smallest squad they can run in, naked. No upgrades. 150 points buys you 18 S5 rending attacks on the charge. And they're probably going to get the charge, given that they can assault anything in 18+ D6 inches.
It's mobility and volume of attacks, combined with the ability to kit them out (relatively) cheaply. Rending's not bad, especially not with the volume of attacks they throw out, but it doesn't make or break them. If it wasn't off-topic, I'd ask someone to Mathhammer 5 TH/ SS Terminators versus 3 or 4 naked TWC.

IMHO Space Wolves have the best basic troop choice. Their entire army is built around getting to within 12" and open fire, after which they're just as effective whether they get the charge or whether they get charged. They're just damned tough, and incredibly resilient. They don't pack that same punch that assault-oriented armies like Blood Angels do, but they can stand up to a lot more than your regular SM army.

I don't think that's off-topic, as the OP is potentially choosing between vanilla SM and SW.
But we'll do 5 vs. 5, because I believe that's equal points.
The TWC get the assault, and strike first with 30 attacks (I thought it was 4 per, but seaward suggests its 5 plus the bonus for assaulting). 15 hits, 10 wounds, with two of the wounds being rends, on average about 2 dead Terminators. 3 terminators strike back with 6 attacks. 3 hits, 3 wounds... at this point it becomes important whether the TWC have a storm shield or two in the unit. If so, that's likely one dead TWC.
If the terminators get the assault (counter-assault or out of a LR), then the TWC go first with 25 attacks, 12 or so hits, 6 wounds with two rends, so about 1 or 2 dead TH terms. The terminators then strike with 12 or 9 attacks, so 5 or 4 wounds.

It sounds to me like Ive got my 40k army of choice, the wolfies have it! now can anyone direct me to a few sights for I may drool over some fresh painted models & can someone give me an idea of what I should purchase 1st & what I should just do without.
not sur if the points total per battle is equal to the fantasy counterpart e.i. friendly games @ 1,500pts tournaments @ 2,250pts or are they less per average game played.

Most tournies are 2.5k. You'll want to buy the codex first, make up some lists, and get some purchasing advice here so you don't use more money then you need to. If you wanna drool over models, go to GW's website and check the gallery here for some wolfie goodness.

Most tourneys in the U.S. tend to be between 1750 and 2000.
2.5k is only 'Ard Boyz, which TBH is a bit of a joke, the game breaks pretty significantly at that points level.

To be totally honest with you, you said you want to be able to mix up your army from time to time)this is important part of my point), you want an army that is mostly choppy but can shoot well(who doesnt?), and as for most current, they are all reasonably current choices, either 4th or 5th edition, and some armies are at 3rd edition so you should be fine. This leads me to suggest Chaos Marines! One of the most versatile, IMO they are the most choppy of marines, have a ton of viable and usefull choices to interchange over time, have awesome fluff, and have great shooting choices! nothing like 3 obliterator squads to ruin your opponents day! or outflanking chosen with awesome melta weapons to easily kill your opponents favorite tank! By what you have said this is easily my reccomendation as no other army quite matches the description you put out, that and who doesnt love being on the bad guys team?

Dave I thank you for your opinion, as I already have a lovely Chaos army for fantasy (check out my gallery) I wanted something different & with the help of the Dakka community I chose Space Wolves, now I need to hook up with someone thats willing to sell me their army asap...lol

just FYI
CSM are not the power house that WoC are in 40k.
they are still good, but while many of their units are similer to units in other codexs they don't do as well.
Land raiders don't have PotMs, but rather demonic posession. they also can only carry 10 models(5 terminators)
some of the more flashy units are terrible. like 1k sons. they look nice and i personally love them, but they are expensive and don't fit with the meta game currently.

My 2 cents to the OP. Go to the GW site and read up on every army. You will get much better information as a starter\noob.
Once you have an idea of what you would like then ask more specific questions.

Just about TWC - Biker Ork nobs with dmg aloccation can be a very distastefull thing to face. TWC with 5 is almost the same thing, but it dont cost so much, and dont need to turbo boost for 3+ save... Perhaps, thay dont have feel no pain.
I personally dont like the fluff on them, but they are very powerfull, and easy to field using biker guys.
Now, back to the topic: congratulations Brother, welcome to the Fang halls, grab your beer, eat a lot of meat and prepare to heard the tales of the heroes of past.
But be prepared: your Grey Hunters are not masters of melee, but they can stand their own when needed. Grab melta guns, wolf standard and rhinos, and never let BA charge you... lol
