Thing is, the US freaks the hell out over some pretty trivial racial issues. If there is a real claim and an FBI investigation that people may have been shot because some rednecks saw they were black and assumed they must be looters, then this would be a big story. But I can't find anything else on it.

It appears not, but I've not looked very hard. However, as you said, this would be all over just about everything if it were veracious.

One may reasonably assume that they didn't belong in that neighborhood, and sure weren't selling Girl Scout Cookies...

If I were in such a situation, and I saw a group of people coming into my neighborhood who clearly didn't belong, you bet I'd be ready and willing to shoot.

These are communities led by people who were raised by those praised as heroes for setting people on fire just because they were sympathetic to the cause giving blacks full rights. I'm amazed they're that restrained.

What's outdated? It was 1960 50 years ago. Hell, the Civil Rights act hadn't even passed yet (as if that alone solved all the problems). Horrific racial violence was still rampant in the south. Those born and raised by the people perpetrating the violence at that time are now middle aged adults, and the leaders of their neighborhoods and communities. Even if their parents weren't out lynching "****** Lovers" they were spending their childhood in an environment where that was considered not only acceptable, but admirable by the mainstream at the time. Their local officials and law enforcement were still by and large outspokenly racist.

This is a very young country, no part of our history is all that far in the past. My own mother met members of her family who were born slaves. I'm 25. It's insane to think that the attitudes that were the very foundation of a region not even a lifetime ago are anything but thriving. Ideas just don't die that easily.

This isn't to say that all white southerns are violently racist. Just that there certainly is a nontrivial number who are, and are so openly. When they pull crap like this, there is no reason at all to be skeptical, surprised or shocked.

And the yuppie, hackjob, draftdodging scumbags was the late 1960s, early 1970s.

Thus, more recent and more accurate going by your logic.

It's asinine to think there's even a shred of truth to this story, considering I've not seen it reported anywhere else whatsoever.

Oh, and also? Situations like this? It's very easy to skew the numbers.

What was the population on this "island", outside of being white?
Was it Cajun families, backwoods country folks who don't really come into contact with the outside world at all, etc?
Was the population center surrounding this island where the shootings took place made up heavily of African American citizenry(because let's face it: if people from a nearby town that's made up of a mostly African American population are coming onto an island where trespassers will be shot...you're going to end up with a higher percentage of African Americans being shot. Why? Because there's more of a percentage of a population made up of African Americans in the locale surrounding the island)?

There's any number of things that could lead to a situation where you can point at it being racism, when it's a simple fact of the population make-up.
