What wire did you both use?
I guess, if you have soft, girly hands, 0,2 mm wire can be "painfull".

0,5 mm wire has the potential to eff up your hand a little, though.

This is a great tutorial. Good, clear pics, makes it easier to see what you are doing.

I've never tried to make barbed wire, but I have some 0.32 and 0.20 inch wire that I used on aircraft in the military for securing bolts. I believe that will be comparable to the 5 mm and 2 mm that you use in Europe.

Yes, as far as I know, poles of this sort were used in WW1 and WW2 by various nations.
