With beastmen you need to keep certain things in mind. Due to the nature of the army you'll be at a disadvantage just by fighting some armies regardless of their makeup. They have little to no armour or ranged ability. So will suffer against ranged armies like dwarf/empire gun lines or teclis/magic heavy high elf armies. But whilst thats true this army can really do well in sheer bodies on the table, Great magic lores and awesome combat support character setups you can have ( especially including the new common items ). If you fancy a somewhat unpredictable but unique army definitely give beasts a try.

Now is a good time to start up HE with the IoB box set, and they have become pretty rocking in 8th, with the changes to Always Strike First, the importance of shooting and the changes to magic. They also have high LD, which should make lower point games where you can't afford a BSB more fun, since your dudes will stick around longer.

Lizards I always recommend to new players, again because of how forgiving cold-blooded LD tests are. They also have a lot of strong troop choices, with some real powerhouses available at larger points - slann, multiple stegs, carnosaur (if you want to be awesome ), etc. And as noted, you get to play with dinosaurs

Ogres and beasts on the other hand are two of my favorite armies out right now, but that's because they're underdog armies that take a little more guts to play. While both are aggressive armies that love to beat people up, and so lots of fun, they both suffer from low LD that, until you can buy a BSB or shoehorn a cheap lord in, will hamper the lower point games you'll be playing to get the hang of things. They also don't really play in all the phases of the game, unlike HE and lizards who excel in pretty much all fields (to differing extents).

Personally though, I say go with the models you like, since you've got to buy, build, paint and look at the things every time you game with them!

There are forum sites dedicated to each warhammer race out there. if you want more information on Ogres go to http://www.ogrestronghold.com/

it's the oldest, largest, and best ogres site on the web.

even if you go with something else you can still ask questions there about anything related to warhammer. the Ogres are very helpful(untill you make them mad and they eat you )
