I play to have fun. I do my best and hope to just have an enjoyable time. I want to win but it is not the source of my enjoyment.

I play for fun, but I always try to win.

I must agree with some previous posters that the players that usually become sour grapes are the ones that say they only play for fun and that they don't care if they win - They tend to blaim lists/codex/rules, while the more competitive/experienced gamers are often more focussed on their own mistakes (ie: they actually know why they lost). I don't even bother going into my local GW to play anymore, it's auto-win and auto-sour grapes each and every time

Also agree that the flamer over rhino thing is both RAW and RAI. The game demands more tactics when you actually play by the rules

I play primarily for fun and not to win, obviously I like to win but it's not what drives me to play a game. Some of the most enjoyable games I've played have been hard fought draws or very minor losses which with better rolling would have gone my way.

Sometimes I play to lose...I throw together a random army and see what does what.

The other week I purposefully ran my tervigon into the open because I wanted to know how the surrounding gants would take the synapse collapse. (Not well mind you)

But I find it better to find these things out before tournament play.

I play to try to win. If I lose which happens around the same amount that I win thats no big deal, it's part of the game and the experience. If I win thats awesome mission accomplished. I don't get mad if I lose because I know that I wouldn't want to play against someone who does that so why would anyone let alone my friends want to play against me being like that. I'm lucky my friends don't get all pissy too. I only have 2 I play with so I guess we can't afford to be cry babies about it otherwise none of us can play. hahaha

Do we screw ourself to use the exact ruling.
"I would hope so. What's the alternative, ignore the detail of the rules in order to gain an advantage?" (Yes, good answer)

Yes, We all want to win and have fun. Lets go to the 2nd part of the question. "do We screw ourselves to use the exact ruling" .This means Being the only person to play by the RAW. By doing this we give up shooting or other things. We are Cheating ourself out of easy kills. Shots the other gamers would try.
The Example is the illistration above. Do you take the shots at the troops behind the Rhino Or would you shoot at a angle like the template Shown above which is RAW.
I do not know anyone who would give up the shots.{ people I actualy know or have played with} The games I see/play, a Rhino gives a cover save not blocking LOS. I accepted the wrong rules because that is how I was tought to play this edition of 40K.
This is the 2nd main rule that my home group got wrong.

If you have a young or inexperienced group, stuff like this will happen all the time. Correcting rules-mistakes against young/inexperienced players is a difficult task. I catch myself maybe being a bit too harsh, I try to give them leeway, so in this example I would allow them to do it once, but I also very much prefer to play by the rules, so I try to teach them what you can and cannot do at the same time. I believe that rules-issues is the main reason that I don't really enjoy playing young/"hobby" players. It doesn't help that GW staff teach people the wrong rules I've heard: "Redshirt told me I could do this" far to many times.

Inexperienced players is a slightly different thing, if they are more mature, they are often more open to learning the rules

This is a different issue. The rhino will of course not always block LOS, that was just a variable set for the example.

I think a rhino could block los. I watched a game, 2 vets were playing. There were 2 rhinos back to back, Making a Rhino wall. I would think that would block LOS.
I can see the need to speed up the game. I use to play 2nd ed "Argue Hammer". Most of us used a laser pointer for exact LOS. Maybe this is why LOS rules are not as strict. To keep the game moving.

...urrrr... I dunno

I play because I find it to be a decent way to relax after whatever it was I was doing that day. I like to win, but I've often found the closer the game, the more enjoyable the experience, so I don't mind losing to a good opponent.

I agree, and that's another reason why I strongly prefer playing against people who play to win. If someone just wants to show up and push guys around and doesn't try to play well, it's not likely that the game is going to be interesting.

For me, in the end, I don't really care if I win or not. (not that I don't try) The journey is the reward. I experience more action and drama playing a game than anything on the tube.

Well then it's a good thing LOS has nothing to do with that example, eh!

The Dread isn't aiming at the troops behind the Rhino, he's aiming at the Rhino. He's got LOS on the Rhino. LOS is a non-issue.
