For a guard list, some thoughts.

CCS with Plasma x4 in a Chimera

Inantry Platoon
PCS with melta x4

31 strong blob squad with Commissar and power weapons x4

Veterans with Plasma x3 in a Chimera

Vendetta with HB sponsons

Your favourite Leman Russ, another Vendetta, or Artillery.

You've got mobile armor to keep away from dangerous assaults while laying down some firepower. The blob squad should be able to take any assault, except the three Carnifex. They should be able to put some wounds on, dropping one of them, or at least tie them up a couple turns. Vendettas kill MCs. Or just about anything, really. They're my favourite piece in my army.

This is a good list. I'll probably add a Demolisher, or I could use a Manticore. Which is better?

I haven't used a Manticore, but I've certainly been tempted to. It's likely to give you some pie, as well as decent anti-tank. There are some extra points in that "list" (which is mainly an outline) for more gear or models if you want.

Use Blood Angels. The Necrons will see thier BFFs and turn against the nids.

Meh, its alright, but it smacks of list tailoring crap. One melta squad, what you are going to do against other mech armies? Plasma is ok, but it doesnt get the job done.

Eidolon, this is a scaled down version of what I already play, not something I tailored. I've found plasma to do fine against transports if need be. One melta squad and a Vendetta will probably handle most 1000 pt lists, assuming his teammate doesn't skimp.
