One guy at my local consistently tries to pull using the old chapter trait system to infiltrate, while this may not seem to bad as he says that before the game, what he doesnt say (and what I found out after the first time I played him) was that he was using it to infiltrate a vulkan, flame/melta/hammernator army. After realising he wasn't just using the old style book because he liked it, rather just taking whichever bits he wanted from both books, there was a mass avoidance in the store until he changed his list. However, the weekend before last I walked in to find him using it against someone who was just out of their tutorials, and had bound both books together so it looked like the current dex only

I was watching a game in a GW store and this guy (mid-30s) tried to convince this kid (12ish) that his Black Templars assaulting out of the Land Raider Crusader were accompanied by 12 Str 4 Ap 5 Small Blasts because the LR Crusader came with grenade support for the squad. I tried to intervene, but the guy got pissed off. So, I went and got the GW employee who corrected him. But, of coarse, since this guy spends $100+ per week, it was more along the lines of "Uhh... I don't think that's right" than what he should have said: "Quit cheating you fether!"

I wish I could say this would abnormal behavior for TOs.
I recall someone who said "Sisters of Battle are girls, and so they can't have BS4, and they're also all S2/T2". He then went to claim that Codex: Witch Hunters was "house rules"... and that the stats in the back of the Rulebook were "typos corrected in a FAQ"... and that my printed out FAQ was out of date...
... mind you, this is probably more to do with general sexism and arse-hattery rather than abusing newbies, but still, it goes to show the depth of stupidity some people will go to in the hobby.
That is aweful.

Many times when an opponent has tried to keep them in btb but make a line with them to avoid mishaps or get closer to assault. That is cheating.
I had always read this as meaning you had to keep the first ring in base contact and allow as many models as possible in that circle, but not as a requirement to actually spiral. " -x- " being legal if the x was placed first.
In any case,
I think asking to see any rule you do not recognize, know, or understand to be key. Even if it's in the main rule book or you just forgot.
If you are in a friendly game and this is an issue, the game is not all that friendly.

This is what it is, mostly.
On the plus side, veterans who are deeply entrenched in old rules are also very commonly deeply entrenched in old tactics. Learn the new rules and use it to make new tactics. Innovation beats obsolescence every time. Don't let tradition weigh you down.
I don't know HOW many times I've had an opponent say "guard are only a shooty army" just to get horribly mugged by a fist SO with a priest or a power blob.

Had some one tank shock my long fangs since I elected to chose my Sgt as a casualty first, after passing my leadership test with a 8 they all have 9 he got mad and said he was just going to move his land raider some where else since it was his moving phase. Well I got that cleared up. Called the to over and was like wtf can he do that. He said no and gave the guy a dirty look. He had been playing at the store for over 5 years and was mad that he was losing to a newbie. Well I smashed his land raider with my wolf guard who had a chain fist :p since. He also refused to open his drop pods so that they blocked line of sight

Dang, we had something similar happen here. But I guess a Warhound beats a Leman Russ Squadron.

I had a few back when I was a noob but the one that stands out in my mind was when I was playing my nids against a Daemonhunters army after the codex was just out and my opponent was using Holocaust at the start of every combat. I like to think it was an honest mistake but the guy is generally a bit of a rules lawyer and the sort of guy who would, if a model fell over, pick him up but move him ever so slightly forward so he was in charge range that turn (that marine standard bearer guy always seemed to fall over a lot) .

The old rules were that firing out of a transport made it open topped. And, every transport could be fired out of (even Wave Serpents).
There were 2 exceptions:
1) Chimeras had lasguns mounted on them, so the transported IG unit could fire those without making it open topped. Firing a heavy weapon would cause it to be open-topped.
2) Marines were immune to making a vehicle open-topped because of their power armor. (I don't remember if transported scouts made it open-topped though).
So, even going by old rules, this example was cheating!

I guess it's not so much spiral as concentric circles, but placing one model at a time I see it as a spiral

The best suggestion given so far is "If something doesn't sound right, speak out"
I remember my very first game, I was 13 or so and I was playing some dude in his mid 20's who looking back was one of the worst kind of wargame predators. Keep enough pressure on someone new with enough confidence and they will start to agree with things that dont seem to make sence. Needless to say I got thrashed and didn't play another random LGS game for almost 2 years.
Dont be afraid to call someone a tard and pack up your minis for another day
