I bum an occasional cigarette and smoke a cigar at parties, but that's about it. For some reason I always feel like I run better the next day after I smoke. I'm thinking about buying a pipe for those times I just need a smoke, but I've never gotten around to it.

I actually agree with you guys on this subject. I totally agree on no smoking in a restaurant, because it never fails, when my family shows up, its some dude with a damn cigar puffing away a booth away. BUT people that complain about it in bars? Really? Why not stop the sale of booze while they are at it. I mean its what you goto a bar for anyways right? To smoke and drink. Hell they actually have smoke free apartments out here where if you live in it, you are not allowed to smoke in side the apartment your renting. That just blows my mind. Your telling me Im paying rent for this place.....but I couldnt smoke in it if I wanted too? Seriously dumb.
We've had smoke free pubs here for a few years now and nobody seems to miss them. That's what the deck outside is for. Although some of the rules they made are crazy. There was a trucker in Ontario who got a ticket for smoking while he was driving. Since he is a truck driver he was not allowed to smoke in his truck that he owned. That is messed up. The non-smoking apartments isn't too hard to get. You're renting it so you need to return it in the same condition you got it in. Yeah, you pay a damage deposit but that isn't going to cover the cost of getting the smell and stains out of all the walls. You also have the problem of smoke from your apartment drifting into other peoples apartments.

Ifalna, you seem insistent that it should only be done at home.
Sorry, I came off wrong earlier. The "doing it at home" statement was in response to smoking being a pastime or hobby which automatically seem home based things to me ( not really though when you think about it ).
Fair enough. Wargaming is one of my pastimes, but it's a social activity for me. I used to only paint at home but now I rarely do. It's usually only at the LGS - I live in a city apartment now and can't undercoat there anyway! I can't play games by myself either.
Now Mr. Burning made an excellent point about the sorts of people that do fart and reek of bodily odour in confined spaces - they're usually socially backwards folk anyway. Plenty of people have no problem with tobacco or other smoke, but most people dislike concentrated discharges of the nitrous gas created as a side-effect of digestion. Body odour has a role in sexual attraction that is largely defunct in our present society - hygiene is now a much higher priority - so we don't make a point of it. Smoking can be considered a custom of the past, but the fact is that millions of people still do it and enjoy it, regardless of the risks. You smoke too much, something might go wrong... but hey, oxygen is a carcinogenic mutagen and we're all hooked on that stuff.

Cigarettes are my main vice, but I also looooooooove a good cigar. Rocky Patel Vintage 90s and 99s are my biggest weakness.
I tend to be a considerate smoker when I'm out and at home I smoke outside when it isn't storming or 20 below. Laws banning smoking at bars drives me nuts though. I simply refuse to go to bars where it's been banned in some of the townships here. If St. Louis proper ever implements a blanketed law against it, I'll probably quit going altogether until I can manage to quit.

The smoking ban in some bars does amuse me a bit,I've actually gone to clubs with "no smoking" polices and laughed as over 80 percent of those patronizing the club kept dashing outdoors to have a quick smoke.
Fortunately, for me,most of the clubs/bars/pubs I go to still permit smoking.
I understand that those who don't smoke don't want to have smoke around when they are eating...so fine...have the restaurants..they're all yours.
I understand people who don't smoke don't want to be in smokey confined areas ...so fine...have the airlines..they are all yours.
But...FFS..let me have my beer and shots with a cigarette like the alcohol gods intended.

QFT. It's just not the same in pubs here anymore. It used to be a great atmosphere, everyone huddled around the table, swapping tall tales and getting discretely bollocksed whilst wreathed in smoke. Good times.
Now, everyone keeps dashing in and out for a smoke - it's less 'communal' somehow.

Makes me wonder about the reasons for it. For instance, had they kicked off with the law being at publican/owners discretion, it would have been pointless. But, with the absolute blanket 'thou shalt not' approach, it leaves room to relax it in the future, once everyone is used to it.

I've smoked maybe 7 cigs in my life? If I'm at a party and somebody is going out for a smoke but no one else joins them I always go and that's really about it. Dipped a few times under similar circumstances. I also like "other herbal products" from time to time with friends.

It's only happened to me a few times, mostly it's my fault though trying to talk to friend while he/she is having a puff and I realize I should shift to his/her side to talk instead in front of the smoke. I don't smoke by the way, except occasionally weed.

However, I have bad allergies and I can't stand being around smoking.

I smoke. My lifelong friend and gaming buddy who referred me to this site does not. When we game at my house, we wargame in my driveway. I usually ask if he cares if I smoke (even being outdoors) while playing. 99.9% of time I get a "I don't mind".
When it comes to smoking in other aspects of life, even being a smoker, I cannot stand when I am going to help my father on a job and he doesn't bother to crack the driver side window of his truck on the way to a job in the morning, thinking I don't mind being hot boxed with cigarette smoke. Funny, because I have to remind him to crack his window, even if I am smoking a cig myself (and have my window cracked).
In terms of blowing smoke in peoples faces; if someone did that to me at a bar or in public, as an insult (have had friends do it jokingly, and it was understood/laughed off) I would put them on the ground. I can get my own smoke from my own cigarette, thanks! hahaha
However, one time while gaming at the local GW store with same buddy mentioned above, I threw in a pinch of chewing tobacco and THAT grossed him out; so I immediately went to the bathroom and spit it out, out of respect for my friend's wishes.

Unfortunately I smoke quite often, have been for the past seven years. Tried to quit (cigarettes) several times and just pick it back up later on, always. I'm also a huge user of shisha pipes, which is just as bad for you. Oh and I also smoke cigars. Either way I'm completely screwed and don't know how I haven't had lung problems already...

I mostly dip, but certainly do enjoy a good cigar. Shame we still have the embargo on Cuban goods... This whole waitin to go to Iraq just to buy their cigars is outrageous. To the whole courtesy thing, even though I dip, I still turn and spit behind me if we're outdoors. If I'm inside and got a game goin on, I always ask who I'm playing with if they mind. As for cancer? I spent a year inhaling various toxins coming off the various KBR burn pits, I'm bound to get somethin.

This thread was soooo long I'm taking a step out of my office to go have a smoke before I finish it. I started smoking because a place I used to work, you took a break when the Supervisor took a break. He smoked. If you were out there and not smoking he would ask what are you doing? If you were smoking, no questions. Made life easier and I am a sucker for addictive habits. I made it a point for a very long time to only smoke there. Then one day I decided I wanted a cigarette when I was at home. Tada! smoking all the time now. Eventually I will grow to hate it, it's already building, that morning cough is starting to bug me. But I've been off and on smoking for 7 years, daily for about the last year. I am respectful of others, and their choices. I live in California, so around here, no smoking in any public business or within 25 feet of public business entrances. Went to GA and VA last year for business, was shocked and stunned when we were allowed to light up in a resturaunt... Anyway, smoking time

Wait, where do you think (real) scotch is actually FROM?
In all seriousness, I'm sure the 'liquor' is pretty similar. We DO have fairly stingy measures for things like spirits, I suppose.
Still, it's more than made up for by this:
