Ok results from Metagames in Springfield, MO:
1st Slaanesh Daemons
2nd WoC
3rd Skaven
4th Dark Elves
5th WoC (me)

The original 1st place winner was disqualified (along with the other 2 participants from the same store). Reasons included slow-playing, a non-WYSIWYG army, and general questionable play. The other players were disqualified for questionable actions and behaviour issues.

2 of the top three players are not going (as far as I know) to Chicago so I may have eaked a spot into the Finals.

Chaos Dwarves!? They are so awesome and very, very nasty in 8th. I am glad to see someone was bold enough to take them!

I just checked the 'Ard Boyz rules on what armies/books were allowed- what is the "Chaos Dwarves: Ravening Hordes"?

An old pdf that you can dig up online that outlines a Chaos Dwarves army. It is actually pretty awesome! Originally, it featured a bunch of armies set to get book, but Chaos Dwarves just never got support. Most tournaments probably don't allow it, but 'Ard Boyz has this year and last (not sure about prior, but most likely).

So we just pester the store owner and hope they get it right? And then drive to chicago and hope for the best? Good cost cutting measure...

Could you elaborate? It would be good to know what to watch out for.

The guy that had won first was disqualified so won't be receiving an invite to Chicago. The other two guys were in bottom half of scoring so weren't even close.

The guys that were bumped up were all cool players. If I am able to go I'll be travelling up with some good guys.

I was at the location mentioned by shattersword. Not as a participant or judge, just as an observer. I watched one of the winning player's games. His first matchup was vs. a WoC army and it was a close battle. Having seen him run a similar list before I thought "well I know who is going to win this 'ard boyz". But like I said that first match was close. If it hadn't been for the Woc failing a break test (he only needed an 8 and even got a BSB re-roll) with his unit of 9-ish Dragon Ogres this game would have probably went the other way (knowing the WoC player personally, this display of shoddy dice rolling comes as no surprise).
I also know the Lizardman player who won the tournament and he is a good player. He regularly wins or places in tournaments.
As far as the Judge not knowing the rules, Kirasu knows the rules for both WFB and 40K better than most players. Even players that are very experienced ask him for rule interpretations. The key is when he doesn't know the answer he admits it and looks it up.
The point to all this is: as a TO in Western PA I knew 6 of the 8 participants in this event. I know most of the other players much better than I know the gentleman that won this event. No one complained to me while I was there or even when I saw them after the event. I always stress to the participants in an event that if you have a problem or issue just come tell a judge. Judges and TO's would rather address a problem than read about it on Dakka later. Shattersword obviously feels cheated. If he had directed his concerns to someone at the event then his worries could have been allayed and perhaps he would have ejoyed himself more and not left feeling slighted.
Judges and TO's give up their free time along with their opportunity to participate and win prizes to ensure that other players get to have fun. If you have a problem we want to fix it.

Well written, Deathwolf.

But what jumped out at me- 9 dragon ogres in a unit!? Is this viable? I've got the part to convert 10, but was thinking to split them into units of 4 (possibly even 3 if tight on points, although I prefer 4...).

I was very interested in seeing the WoC builds that did well. At ours both of the WoC lists were pretty similar in function, although I was impressed that the list with throgg and trolls ended up doing better.

I've been doing really well with my trolls for a long time now. Unless the enemy comes packing a lot of fire they are hard to beat. Purple sun is also a big problem.

While warriors/chosen got a big boost in 8th, I think trolls got an even bigger one.

Yes. That is viable. Any block of big guys is viable now. 2 Ranks of 4 leaves one in the back so you have a decent chance of still having your second rank even if they take some shooting. And if your opponent shoots everything he has at them, the rest of your army rolls in untouched.

Big units win games.

The problem I've seen doing that with dragon ogres is that they're so expensive! 77 with GWs, 73 with AHW. I'm not sure why it seems different than doing it with treekin, which I do all the time and they're 65 points. But then again, they're toughness 5, same armor save, and a 5+ ward (but only 3 wounds instead of 4, and flammable).

The other dilemma I've run into is that if you give them AHW, the back ranks don't benefit from the extra attack. So for example 4 dragon ogres with AHW run in a single rank will get 16 attacks + 4 stomp against infantry = 20 attacks. Whereas 6 dragon ogres with AHW, run in 3x2 formation, will get 21 attacks + 3 stomp = 24 attacks. It's a lot more points for not that many more attacks!

Of course, great weapons makes this difference less stark, but then they're slightly more expensive and it's not the optimal weapon for them, imho.

Anyway, just my thoughts . Glad to see the trolls are working out since I'm building some right now!!

He ran them in 2 ranks of 5.. huge frontage and it worked alright. Problem is he missed a lot and once you win combat against that unit they flee

Congrats, barlio! Not sure if Chicago or Philly is closer for you, but Showcase Comics just outside Philly is top notch. That's where we played the semis, and they're also hosting one of the finals (see above).

Chicago is closer (about 9 hours), but that's cool that I have options.
