I've basically always gone by the " If I can clearly understand the message/idea the poster is trying to convey...I don't particular care if they spelled Immolation (etc) correctly" train of thought.

Oh...and I wouldn't drink Bud light if you held me at gun point.

I'm prejudiced against poor grammar, spelling, style, and several other things besides. However, being the optimist that I am, I see that the glass is half full: such things indicate that there's no content worth reading so I can move on.

Of course not, everyone dislikes terrible beer. I was referring to the generalization that Americans only drink bad beers.

I have a serious on-topic question though. Underlying assumption: People pedantic enough to start a spelling thread are also the kinds of people who would pay enough attention to detail to notice stickies.

My question: Can we just sticky a thread complaining about spelling/grammar/kids-these-days/Eternal-September and then never actually see these topics show up again?

Everyone gets all in a huff about this thread being created again yet nothing forces you to enter it, nothing made you read it. There was no over powering force that moved your hand to open the thread. It would make sense to me that if you are tired of reading a particular topic that has surfaced more then once then you simply don't read it when it does surface and leave it to those who actually want to discuss it.

And at the same time if there is going to be such an uproar that someone has created a discussion that has been done before I suggest every topic that has been created and then recreated more then once be answered with a moderators reply "use search engine" and then closed. I mean if it is so horrible that someone has created a thread that god forbid has been done before then it ought to be the same with every thread that someone has done before. Dakka can be nothing but a series of stickies.

It would make things really simple on Dakka so I think we should do this about every thread that isn't original because then every Dakkaite would have great feedback considering there would only be a few original posts done daily. We really should take away peoples ability to discuss whatever they like on the site and just give them options of sticky threads to read so that way those people who complain about a resurfaced thread can be happy. Yes that's exactly what we should do

This sounds like a plan, but I couldn't find the appropriate demodivational poster for it :-(

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

That maybe so Warboss, but a quick flick through the thread so far suggests that if people who didn't give a gakk stayed away, there would be yourself and the elequent sound of crickets singing sweetly to the tumbleweed.

Don't worry, another round of Dakkagrams will pass by shortly.

If you cannot make sense of a post due to poor English, then it is probably in breach of Dakka rules and/or you are as drunk as a lord. If the former, hit the triangular button and alert the mods. If the latter, then sleep it off and hope it will make more sense when the hangover clears

@Chibi:

There IS at least one good thing to have come of this thread. You have bestowed upon me the most wonderful saying: "Drunk as a lord." I'll say, with surprising amounts of sincerity, that I didn't realize prior to just how quite empty my life was before I heard that. We yanks don't often get sayings nearly as memorable as yours.

I'll be trying it out this weekend.

You might want to have a better look then because there have been a few people who have actually contributed something to the conversation.

And if it is so horrible as those of you have said that this thread was created yet again and that no one actually cares about the topic then woulden't it make sense NOT to post in it so that it dies quickly? I mean that just may be my common sense but who knows I could be wrong.

If you don't like a thread it is customary to troll or express to everyone reading how much you dislike the topic. That way you either drag it down or encourage other people not to participate in the thread.

Dakka has so many users, old worn out topics can keep be sustained for a long time. See 40k General.

Really? I find that surprising considering that there are rules on Dakka against those very actions. How curious

He was being slightly sarcastic........ aside from good grammar and spelling it also helps if you don't take yourself too seriously around here..... just about everyone at some time has started a winner of a thread like this one. Don't take it personally.

You're surprised even though the very first post in this topic was complaining about the topic.

As I have said before I am not complaining about anything I am simply adressing a topic.

There is a differance between addressing a topic and complaining about a recuring thread when most of the threads on this site are nothing but recuring.

You know, for a little while I have been wondering if it was just me... but now I know I am right. This makes me sad. "Grammer and puncuation" are two very important things in my opinion, so that people can understand what you are saying. Although some errors are just .

I think the introduction of more Grammer to Dakka Dakka would be a wonderful thing that all of the people involved would appreciate. I think it would be a wonderful show up support of the original poster and everyone involved would donate so that Yakface and Legoburner could both have more Grammer in their lives.

To be perfectly honest you are correct to have concerns about the quality of the posts, Warboss.
I am not wholly antithetical to your stance.

However for the smooth running of an internet forum, where some posters will be contributing by mobile phone, a certain degree of latitude imho is permissible.

We all make mistakes from time to time and the internet tends to be less formal, so again I believe some liberties are okay.
As long the language is not being bent beyond comprehension, there are more important issues to lose sleep over.

I must say, at first I was opposed to more Grammer, but now I just find myself wanting it... If only for the inevitable "Yo, dawg, I heard you like Grammer, so we put grammar in your Grammer so you can practice your grammar while you practice your Grammer," as well as the having of a comfy-looking busdriver's seat.

That being said, spelling mistakes are alright, and intentional faux pas are fine if they're meant to be humorous. Otherwise, just proof-read what you post before hitting "Submit". it doesn't take much time, and will avoid it becoming an issue.

I haven't noticed any decline in post quality on Dakka (at least not with regard to English). Generally speaking though; I do see a lot of questionable English being thrown about on the Internet.

I don't believe that the use or application of proper spelling and grammar is on the decline. I think this is just a perceived decent, due largely to changing times.

Ever since the telephone became affordable (and up until about 15 years ago) writing stopped being so important to ordinary people. Most of what we used to read in our daily lives would have been written by a professional writer. Be it a journalist, author, teacher, or at least a secretary or administrator of some sort. If the rest of us did have the misfortune of having to write something, then we would usually try to find someone who was old enough to remember being beaten in school to check it over for us.

Now of course we have the Internet and text messaging. All of a sudden more and more ordinary people are returning to the written word as a means of communication, and in doing so are highlighting the epic failings of our education system.

It is also worth noting that our writing was never really designed to be used in the casual instant way we use it today. I believe it is overly formal and ritualised, and the punctuation available is insufficient for our purposes. This is why we have seen the introduction of smileys, and people turning to cruder methods of punctuation and formatting such as capitalisation, parenthesis, ellipsis and word elooooooooongating, to name but a few...

Ultimately, writing is hard. I endeavour to keep my posts as intelligible as I can, because I know that how you say something is often more important than what you actually say. Let's face it, If you spell like a slowed person... that is what people are going to think you are.

The level of maturity within this thread is just shocking.

For those of you who have gotten past the fact that I'm not the best when it comes to spelling (or maybe actually read the OP) and have provided relevant posts thank you.
