If at a friendly game: I will know the person or at least seen him/her around, so I greet and talk smack ect. Smoke breaks a plus.
At a tourney: Ill greet with a friendly smile and offer them a soda from my stash, I explain my units as I'm deploying them and ask alot of questions while they are deploying ect.
Smoke break after the game where we talk about what we should've done different ect ect.

This, strangely, is how most of the people at my FLGS greet each other. An outsider would be shocked to hear the crap we say during out casual games. But at tourney and such, its very much a "hello and handshake" type of greeting. After a few rounds and things start loosening up, then the comments and jibes start up.

I am a hello and handshake kind of guy.
Asking if my opponents are familiar with Tyranids and some of the wierdness that can come from them is next.
Once everyone is comfortable I explain some of my. . .nefarious plans and explain how and why they work, so that if discussion is needed it can occur before the game.

I will friendly handshake the opponent, say my name, show my list, and then ask what he will play and then I start to scrutinize him in a friendly manner while he deploys, for getting some reads about his nature (how confident is he, how alert and so on). And study his list carefully. Then the battleplan develops...

Warming up the dice is a must for me. I typically roll my cube, and use the 4-6's during the game. The 1-3's I stick back in the cube as punishment. They have to sit and watch their buddies having fun on the table... That'll teach 'em to roll low.

I think your point could have been made without the "down syndrome" comment. I know the "r word" and associated comments like you used above are one of the last remaining socially accepted forms of discrimination and hate speech, but I thought I would just point out a few things:
Cognitive development in children with Down Syndrome is just as variable as typical children.
I can tell you that having worked in a professional capacity with this population for many years that having Down Syndrome does not in and of itself preclude possession of skill at hobby/artistic endeavors. Children with Down syndrome have a wide range of abilities,IQs, success at school can vary greatly, and they have the same distribution of artistic skill as non-Down Syndrome populations, and thus it is important to evaluate children individually (and to avoid perpetuating unsupported and offensive stereotypes).
So while I get the effect you were going for with your statement it is as devoid of fact as it was offensive...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now back to your regular programming...
What about purely non-mosaic Down's Syndrome? I know that Mosiac Down's has a wide range of effects. Under Social Security Regulations, we simply assume that anoybody with non-mosaic Down's is disabled from birth.
And, as far as discrimination, there is a pretty natural progression to who we've rooted it out in our society. Race is immutable, with no consistent differences in characterstics. Religion is considered a matter of consious. Sex still allows for some discrimination, at this point mostly the extent that the sexes are different. Sexual Orientation is still contentious, but will become taboo in a few generations as we grow to undertand more about.
Here's the reason there will always be discrimination against those with mental impariments: they are, by definition, a group that has limitations. I think that the discrimination should be as limiited as possible, and I agree that we should always judge people, not groups. Just keep in mind that there are reasons other than bigotry behind that discrimination.

Yeah, I'm going to read a massive tome to prove a point. If I've made a factual error, please let me know (or at least where to look it up). I'm not a psychologist. I'm a lawyer, and legal defintions of disaiblity dont' always mesh 100% with medical defintions. Also, if you freak out every time somebody doesn't read the DSM-IV, it's got to be difficult to get anything done.

Also remember the word slowed is actually a medical term! So if any silly people get angry at you. Say you spoke to someone on dakka dakka or something. Sure that would prove a point .

The term retardation is still used. Still it's one thing to say something like: "the patient suffers from mental retardation" is generally ok, but I'd avoid using the term for anything other than descriptions of mental conditions.
Even in medicine there is a move to describe the condition, not the person. You're unlikely to find a doctor reffering to a patient as a slow.

Warning From Magnus? Not Listening!
|
Whether it be a game with an old friend, or one with someone I've just met, I always meet and greet with a handshake. Always have been my way, and probably always will be. Being amicable and polite is how I was raised, and I see no reason to conduct myself any differently at a table top game than I would at a business meeting.
On a side note though, I have another question concerning what I consider "game etiquette".
Some people, when rolling for TL weapons, roll 2 dice at once and take the better of both rolls. Personally, I don't mind this when people do it, but I have seen others raise eyebrows and actually be accused of cheating for doing it. While I suppose to the letter of RAW, they would be doing this incorrectly, is there any need for animosity?
As for myself, I ask my opponents prior to rolling if they are "okay" with me doing so. In the interest of saving time, I find it helps speed things along. Outside of that though, I have no problems with rerolling my TL attacks when they miss the first time, if my opponent prefers this way.
So my question is, what do you all think is the proper way of approaching this situation? What's your opinion in rolling TL dice together?
Please share!

I dont' like rolling two dice for twin linked. I can't articulate why, I just dont'.
Part of it, I think, is that if the twin linked weapon has more than one shot, you have to roll all the shots, and then re-roll anyway. Rolling both dice for a single shot twinlinked weapon is such a wierd little special case that it's more likely to confuse me.
I'd never make a big deal of it, and probably wouldn't even express such a concern if asked in person, but if you're looking for opinions that's mine.

For a single shot, it's fine.
For multiple weapons or a weapon with multiple shots you have to roll and then re-roll. E.G. for a TLHB, rolling six dice is not cool - that is in fact cheating as the odds of getting three hits just shot up.

in all honesty i havent made an entrance before as I have played only a few games awhile back. If I was going to play at a local store though with a complete stranger, I would definately follow your appraoch and ethics. This game is more complex than just moving toys around a table, it should be played with a certain expectation of maturity and civility. Setting a professional tone at the table that shows you care about the integrity of the game could really go a long way.
