3. Spiderman II (Doc Octopus)
4. The incredible hulk (newest one)

Did you really like his version of the joker better? I think Ledger did a fantastic job playing the Joker personally

That was my first thought but didn't see a way to do it, since we are doing rankings.

Hmm.....Well in general, I disapprove of the newer batman movies....Too grimdark for me. I get enough of that from 40k

Ledger made a wonderful Joker, I'll admit. But Nicholson...He really made the joker. As a kid, when I thought of the joker, I thought of jack. His personality in other movies was very 'jokeresque' as well. I think my judgement is probably due to childhood experience though.

Eternal Plague

My top ten:

10. Darkman- The attempt by Sam Raimi to create a super hero when denied the ability to work with more mainstream heroes. He creates a classic, credible backstory for Liam Neeson to fit into as a tormented vigilante superhero seeking to harm those that took away his original life. It is dark, emotional, and very Rami-esque film.

9. Adventures of Captain Marvel- One of the first of its kind, AoCM was a series of movies split over chapters featuring the first ever comic book adaptation of a super hero. This is significant because AoCM helped launch successive chapter movies of other super heroes and helped fuel the rise of other super hero related visual media.

Now take this with a grain of salt- the 1941 movies are corny by today's standards, but it featured a murderous superhero willing to kill and threaten murder in order to achieve his goals. The things this movie did (special effects, stunts, formula for a hero movie) would be the blue print for many years following the end of this movie.

8. The Watchmen- From one perspective, this is one of the most faithful adaptations of source material ever for a comic book series. Written almost to a T in a panel by panel copy of the graphic novel, it is what hungry fans of the book wanted. On the other hand, the movie has been criticized for adhering too faithfully to the book and not giving itself a life of its own.

I myself was hooked almost instantly the minute the opening credits rolled, as they did a perfect tie into the reality of the Watchmen by showing an alternate history following Dr. Manhattan's birth.

It's a must watch for fans of the book, but it can be disconcerting for people who did not read the original comics or picked up the graphic novel, as some elements were not entirely included in the original run of the movie.

7. Unbreakable- One of the few films we can thank M. Night Shameheisntmute for. Featuring a star duo of Bruce Willis in a role typical for him (a hero unwillingly dragged into the crisis) and Samuel L. Jackson in a very atypical role (an intellectual cripple), the movie builds up very nicely and does a great job of presenting the dynamics of the hero/villian relationship from a fairly realistic expectation (given the fact this is a superhero movie). The twist ending was done decently, though I think the fact the movie lacked a definite climax up until that point gave many a mixed resolution to the whole movie. We didn't know what to treat as the climax up until two minutes before the credits roll.

The best way to describe this movie is how Harry Potter plays out versus the real world. Everything is under the surface of "normal" and the magic is slowly teased out little by little as the plot unfolds.

6. The Crow- A very dark and very brooding movie- it features an avenging hero returned from the grave to kill everyone involved in the murder of him and his lover. This movie has all the traditional elements of a superhero movie and then delves deep into the depths of hell to pull out something unique. The fight scenes are bloody and gritty, and the hero does not appear overpowering (except the scene where he gets shot over and over again, stands up, and then starts killing everyone in sight), but is a sadistic murderer when he wants to be.

I rank it sixth because after it the movies that follow are simply too damn good and for a number of reasons including the money thrown into their production, the stars and talent pumped into them, they simply outcompete the prior competition.

5. Superman (1978)- This is the movie that launched the modern super hero movie genre. Compare it to how Star Wars: Episode 4 launched the other movies; it may not be the best, but it was what defined the rest of the series.

However you slice it, Superman '78 did as much right as it could: it produced above average special effects, casted a great actor (Christopher Reeves), had a great director (Richard Donner), and featured a sound supporting cast and reasonable plot using the source material available (I, however do not like the blow up half the United States to make yourself richer scheme. Too old school comics for me).

4. Batman (1989)- This movie helped remake the image of the Batman for the '90s. With Tim Burton as director and Michael Keaton playing Bruce Wayne/Batman and Jack Nicholson casted as the Joker, it was the delight of my childhood.

I loved watching the macabre humor as the Joker murdered dozens of Gothamites. I also liked the presence the Batman inflicted upon the lesser criminals and the ease he dealt with the lesser minions of the Joker using his skills and technology to defeat an insane lunatic.

That being said, it is a dated movie today and lacks some of the CGI and special effects polish most movies add to inspire an audience. However, it is an iconic Superhero movie that cannot be missed and must be watched in comparison to the disgustingly good reboot done 17 years later.

3. Spiderman (2002)- A movie that reinvented Spiderman as a superhero for the 21st century. The movie does a great build-up of the character and helps erect the emotional cinderblocks of Peter Parker's tormented past.

As a New Yorker, I may of been more emotionally tied to this movie than others, but with each minute that passed, the movie's actors did a very credible job in helping the non-action scenes remain interesting. Toby Maguire's initial foray as Spiderman/Peter Parker was well done (as opposed to some of his acting later in SM2 and SM3 which was fairly lackluster IMO) as his dry sarcasm and witty remarks fit well into who he was portraying.

The action and moral choices presented to Spiderman were perhaps the best done in the entire series. When we go deeper into the trilogy, the cliche of the hero's choice becomes redundant and the further you begin to question why he has to keep on deciding to be selfish of be Spiderman.

In short, Spiderman is a great stand alone movie, and perhaps they should of ended it at Spiderman 2.

2. Iron Man- A movie that showcased the hero of the 21st century, arrogant weapons creator mogul Tony Stark becomes forever tied to a suit of high-tech armor, fighting to destroy the weapons his legacy created.

It was a slick, fast paced movie that was done very well. It may of been beat out by other movies either in plot, or special effects, or maybe even character development, but the overall feeling I get from this movie was that it balanced the superhero with the mundane enough to make it credible without making it Alice in Wonderland outlandish. Anything that did appear out of the ordinary was taken in stride and presented as something mundane to the likes of playboy fast lane billionaire Tony Stark.

1. The Dark Knight- I cannot stress enough how I am loathe to put this movie over the original Batman. However, it is the highest grossing superhero movie ever, topping the charts at over 1 billion dollars (interestingly enough, three of the top ten grossing films to date stars Johnny Depp, who on those merits alone, raked in 3 billion dollars combined). And every time I watch this movie, I simply cannot stop watching it. It is as if the movie was made perfectly, and everything just simply molds together as if all the characters, plots, settings, music, and action was joined together by a master artist.

I will not praise the Dark Knight anymore. It is just simply too perfect to describe.

Haven't ever liked ANYTHING Heath Ledger has done.

The rest of the OP I've not actually seen yet. Watchmen bored me to tears as a comic. Worse than Sandman.

Watchmen was garbage IMO, the only deviation (the end) from the comic was the only good bit of the film. The director was FAR too reverential of the subject material.

I have to say, the ONLY thing that made me even slightly like that movie, was the fact that Michael Clark Dunken (sp?) played the Kingpin. Sure he is traditionally a white man, but he hit the nail on the head if you ask me. Huge? Yes. Deep scary voice? Yes. Realistically could throw Daredevil over a building? Yup thats there too

All right updated rankings based on recent input.

With the 2nd round of tabulations we see Iron Man I and Dark Knight retaining #1 and #2. Watchmen drops a bit and Batman(89), Unbreakable, and Spiderman II skyrocketing up the rankings. Superman and superman II make some moves, Fantastic Four I enters the rankings, and Mystery Men leaves the rankings.

1) Iron Man
2) The Dark Knight
3) Hellboy
4) Batman (1989)
5) Spider-Man II
6) Watchmen
7) X-Men
8) Batman Begins

15) Superman II (1980)
16) Hellboy II
17) V for Vendetta
18) Kick-Ass

20) Fantastic Four I

Once we get a good sampling I will amend the OP with the rankings.

FYI Spiderman III is currently 29th out of 71. 3 people have ranked it so far. I was entertained by it. I liked the sand man and venom interpretations. To be honest I'm a bit surprised Hulk I is doing so well, as a lot of people say how horrible they thought it was. I personally loved the "deep" nature to the film. It's a thinking man's superhero movie.

Agree with you there. Sure it was a bit slow, but when he finally became Hulk, and just started kicking ass everywhere, MAN did he kick ass. I mean how far did he toss that damn tank?

In your head, screwing with your thoughts...

Why the hell is nobody voting for Mystery Men? I swear it's like you people have never watched it! If you haven't seen that movie, go watch it now and don't come back to this thread until you do?

As for me, my top 5 are The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Mystery Men, V for Vendetta and Kick-Ass.

P.S. Stop voting for Incredibles, it was a CGI movie! Read the rules for feth's sake... Even Frazzled is guilty of this, and you would think a mod would be at least passably good at following rules... (although I definitely agree that it was an excellent movie)

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

The only thing in Mystery Men remotely worth watching is Ben Stiller. Jeanine Garofalo is just awful, and I was just embarrassed for William H. Macy through the whole thing.

It's a fething travesty of a movie.

No no...they were monsters who deserved to die.

Superman is pure. He never turned evil/cyborg-robot/mass murderer, even in alternate dimensions that never caused a crisis.

I tend to enjoy the off-kilter movies that happen to be based on graphic novels. Not necessarily superhero movies to their very core, but they could definitely be categorized as such if need be.

My very favorite comic-centric movie is definitely Sin City. This is the only case where I feel that the transferrence of these two particular mediums was absolutely perfect. The visual style of Sin City is incredibly innovative, and the movie manages to stand on it's own in that respect. It is so true to the source material that they literally used the comic series as the storyboard when creating the movie. They definitely picked the best three stories to use, and the casting was nearly perfect for every single character. Sin City sits somewhere among my top ten favorite movies of all time, source material nonwithstanding.

My second favorite is Ichi the Killer. Takeshi Miike did a wonderful job of translating the manga series through his own unique directorial filter, and the movie takes on a much darker slant as a result. Ichi the Killer is rife with uncomfortable moments that display the darkest depths of sadomasochism, and the story that it weaves within those moments is both tragic and wonderfully off-beat.

My third favorite 'superhero' movie is definitely Kick-Ass. If a movie could be diagnosed with ADHD, that would be a perfect description of what this movie is all about, with all of the film genres that Kick-Ass manages to fit into a two hour period. There are certainly some problems with the movie, but it did such a good job of surpassing my expectations that I can't help but love it. It's also one of the few movies that manages to be better than it's source material.
