The only way to enjoy Garfield

Garfield Minus Garfield

So many webcomics eventually get collected into book form that we decided to leave webcomics as a whole off this list, but "Garfield Minus Garfield" isn't actually a webcomic so much as an anti-newspaper-comic. Creator Dan Walsh finds the weirdness and angst in Jim Davis' committee-created, achingly banal comic strip Garfield by erasing the title character, plus selected word balloons from other characters, in order to leave Garfield's owner Jon Arbuckle alone in the strip. The results are surreal and depressing: Jon talks to himself, attempts to amuse himself, and bursts into tears, or just winds up staring blankly at walls. But Walsh isn't just creating Dada nonsense, he's pointing out that this Garfield is a cat, cats can't talk, and Jon really is just talking creepily to himself whenever he "converses" with his grouchy pet. The recent book collection Garfield Minus Garfield—approved by Davis, who'll seemingly approve anything for a buck—goes the website one better by showing the original strips alongside the altered ones. Oddly, this makes Walsh's recreations less funny, since it's much clearer how dumb the strips were to start with.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Portraying a spider as an American service-member and swatting him and calling him stupid, on Veteran's Day? Jim Davis knew exactly what he was doing, and I'd go so far as to say that the entire Liberal News Media had a hand in this. It stinks right to the top.

Now, that alone would make him a traitor. I'm not saying that we should hang him. That would be barbaric. I'd be happy if he was severely scourged and drummed out of the United States across the Canadian border.

As for being a terrorist sympathizer, I shouldn't have to explain to you that the USA is at war with Muslims and Muslims are terrorists. I mean honestly, don't you watch the news?

Check and Mate.

You have to want to see it and MR obliviously wants to see it. There is nothing in the strip that says the spider is a service member or any subtle clues. You also have to ignore both Jim Davis's personal history, the comic's history, and the recent statement made by Jim Davis himself to honestly believe this was anything more than a mistake of bad timing.

Maybe he can go live in a real communist country. We'll see how funny Garfield is when he's standing in a bread line.

Here is the Constitutional definition of treason from Article III, Section 3:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the
same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

Now, please tell me how anything Jim Davis did constituted open war against the United States or gave an enemy of the United States aid or comfort. And before we go into psychological land, comfort has a physical component (i.e. shelter, medical treatment, etc.) that must be met for it to constitute treason. Please stop taking a completely harmless comic strip and getting bend around the axle about it. Crying "Wolf" over something like this only spreads ignorance and complicates matters rather than resolving anything.

Look, I'm not going to sit here and debate the definition of treason because I have all of this week's Glenn Beck program on DVR and I need to watch them again and revise my notes. I simply don't have the time for all this tomfoolery.

I just wanted to bring attention to this, that's all. You can make your own decisions.

Until this I wasn't sure just how serious you were being. You did a good job of riding that fine line for a while and kept us guessing, but you tipped your hand this time.

Whats wrong with communism? Whats wrong with protesting against war? I say Britain is wrong to invest time, money and people into Afghanistan and Iraq, does that mean I deserve to be beaten out of my country?

Here's an idea, why don't you list your evidence clearly, that way we can all debate your points which so far, just seem to be a strange understanding of the comic.

Dude I really do hope you are not serious for two reasons 1. That is 100% inappropriate to say about anyone dude seriously that isnt treason unless he is deliberately acting against the Us government (which he isnt) or preforming any foreing espionage (which he isnt) he hasnt done anything relatively close to treason and in no way is a "terrorist sympathizer" and 2. Dude I'm actually a very educated Communist so I think you have something largely mistake with that comment.

I Find it interesting that the same people getting up in arms about this. Are the same ones who were upset that an artist can't draw Muhammad with a bomb on his head... Seriously people pick a view, is a comic free speech you can disagree with? Or not?

Thats a rather umm odd statement I wasnt upset about the artist who wanted to draw Muhammad with a bomb on his head, I just think this is a bogus way to label this person because of a comic, they are calling him something serious and honestly shame on them its childish and slowed because if he is gonna draw that he is gonna draw it end of story.

I think that Troll is a strong term.

I prefer to classify it as "satire", as there was no malice intended.

Sure, other than getting people purposefully riled up and thinking you must be off your nut. Or, and this is key, there are no pictures to describe what you want us to believe you were trying to do. Or at least not funny ones.

I didn't say there were no funny pictures in this thread, I was referring to funny pictures about your semi-trolling.

Garfield is not, never has been, and never will be funny. Same goes for Ziggy, Family Circus, Cathy, Blondie, Hagar the Horrible, and almost every other comic strip in papers today.
