Our troops are crap, but they have their niches;
Defender Guardians
A cheap source of bodies. Stick them on an objective in cover (maybe with fortune) and they can shrug off a moderate amount of firepower for their cost. Assault units will roll over them. Don't expect them to kill anything.
You could use them as a cheap, very temporary tarpit to protect units like Wraithguard or Wraithlord from being charged.
Storm Guardians
Give them 2 flamers and a Warlock with Destructor. That's 3 templates and a melee weapon that hits at S9 vs vehicles for ~130pts. Decent firepower and versatility for the cost, but must be transported to do any damage. They will not kill anything in CC, do not try (the pistol+ccw does not help!).
Dire Avengers
With bladestorm, ~30 S4 shots against a doomed squad will kill 5 MEQs. A lot of effort to kill half a squad of marines however.
They are also the cheapest choice to stick in a waveserpent to make it scoring.
Guardian Jetbikes
They can create a 3+ cover save for themselves, and move fast enough to stay out of assault range.
Take a squad of 3, reserve them as long as possible then use their speed to hide them until the end of the game. Then jump them across the board to objectives.
Alternatively take 6 with 2 shuricannons. Use their speed to hop them over vehicles to hit rear armour with 6 S6 shots.
Rangers/Pathfinders
They are virtually indestructable to ranged weapons while in cover. Place an objective in cover far from anything else then have them camp it. If there are any buildings, place them on the top - this will give them some protection against flamers and assault units.
Remember, they can rend from both their hits and wounds.
Wraithguard
Extremely resilient. Similar to Rangers/Pathfinders they can camp objectives in cover well. They will usually only get one round of shooting before they are assaulted, because of their short range, so keep a dedicated assault unit nearby to countercharge.
Harlequins standing in front of them will grant them a cover save. VoT will keep the Harlies themselves safe, plus they provide assault countercharge for the Wraithguard.
