I like to take at least one unit for the sole purpose of having them deny infiltration locations and scout moves.

You'll have to roll off, but if you win that roll off, you can push genestealers back into their own deployment zone, and vendetta alpha strikes get shut completely down.

I run mine with plasma guns. The rest of my list doesn't have any trouble with heavy armor, and I like what plasma brings to them. There is nothing wrong with running two melta guns as well though.

When I don't need to infiltrate them to disrupt enemy infiltrators and scouts, I still have the choice of embarking in a vendetta or deep striking. Its a really flexible unit to have. I would be careful not to overspend on them, but you'd have a hard time convincing me to cut my single unit.

Also what hasnt been mentioned yet, is that if you wanted a truly annoying alpha strike list, then three units of storm troopers with meltas in chimeras, three demo vets with meltas, and three vendettas, gives you 6 vehicles with scout moves loaded with special weapons. If you manage to get that first turn, you'll have close range melta shots on 6 different targets on the top of turn 1.

I'm not commenting on whether or not that is a winning strategy. (topic for another thread). But its a fun thing that storm troopers can do.

Next turn, the plasma fires again and kills another couple making it 90 points that you killed with a 105 point squad.

Maybe if your opponent is a slow. Instead, what will probably happen is half the unit will get gunned down by bolt pistols/special weapons, and then cleaned out in close combat. But hey, at least you distracted them a little bit. Stormtroopers cost as much as those Space Marines, and trying to fight a battle of attrition when you have 1 less WS, S, T, and I is just bad planning.

So no, using them for hunting Space Marines is not the way to go. Suicide destruction of the occasional tank? Sure. Taking out a few stragglers/loners/eldar aspects? Why not. But leave the serious killing for the serious guns.
