Banners, musicians and the unit champ must go in front, and would displace the lord. So it wouldn't work so well with the dwarf lord.
On the other hand, 10+ hammerers, with musician and champ is a pretty good way to keep a BSB/Rune Smith alive and out of combat; since the characters would be in the 2nd rank.

Not true in 7th. And it works in 8th, because you can "make way" up into the first rank once in combat.

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

I was talking about 8th not 7th, but I didn't even think of make way. That's awesome sauce.

That's pretty good. You could get a +1 combat res banner, +1 for the standard, and have a shot of winning combat.
Of course, being 2 wide, means anything with with a normal formation will be steadfast, but that's not so bad.

I'll have to look at this type of thing for more armies as see what I can come up with.

...that is so terribly silly. I suppose it's vulnerable to shooting, though, so I would only laugh when my opponent used it, rather than punch him in the nose (just a little bit).

What I meant, Matt, was that the Empire and the Dwarfs have plenty of units that stick around, but few that can dish it out. And those that can (Hammerers) are essentially the opposite of the rest of the army.

Again, not saying that Hammerers aren't useful, just that the idea behind them (bodyguards) seems in conflict with their stats (low survivability, by comparison to most of the army). Exactly like the Black Guard are now, and with the same exact problem of idea versus execution.
