For those of you owning the codex, flip to page 44 and read the last few sentences of the final paragraph. "What a zoanthrope would be capable of [if] it were to truly focus or exert itself- or worse yet, what a group of such beasts could achieve by synchronising their intellectual powers - is probably best left to the imagination of folk williing to invite such nightmares"(Games-workshop, Pg. 44).
Now imagine that a Zoanthrope, has just consumed all of the souls of an ENTIRE Craftworld, and suddenly disappeared... Severed from the control of the hive-mind, what would it's intelligence be, not only that, but its tactical stategy/acumen!?

Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

According to Eldar 4th ed fluff it's solidified warp energy. I'm not sure how correct that (My version) is can you put a passage from the codex up?

Tyranids also consume non-organic material, so that could include wraithbone. If it is made of warp energy, then they would just get indigestion.

Yup, just read it... Psychoplastics... Says that they are Semi-Organic, meaning that they would yield biomass... That's not to say that tyranids Don't consume inorganic matter...

They fight each other and the winner absorbs the loser gaining it's new biomorphic gubbins. Basically the Tyranid race is survival of the fittest taken to the biggest possible extreme.

Contrare to common belief, Nids can be played either way. I have access to troops more akin to space marines, albeit more fleshy and less armory. You can easily pull of a list without actually using gaunts, though it would be a challenging list to play. My warriors list comprises of only 50ish models. Or, you could field genestealers, with scything talons, bringing them to the EXACT cost of a space marine...
You could always ask someone at your local gamestore if you could try their nids, and try and compose a list without the use of gaunts!
I sound like im advertising them

Well, that got off topic quickly.
So summing up what I take from this thread is that Tyranids can eat wraithbone and Doom of Malan'tai can also eat souls. The purpose of the soul-eatery is still kind of a mystery to me, though. Any thoughts on that?

I'm still not sure. Some are saying it would yield biomass, but if the others are correct in stating it is part warp I doubt Tyranids would be attracted to that.

Yes, but the fact remains that the Hive Mind has the ability to fuke up the Warp. Which, IMO, suggests epic capacities of Warp power from the collective.

It seems plausible that they can digest wraithbone. Malantai being left desolate can be explained by lack of ripper cleanup or rapid evacuation for a more suitable target. Or that the only thing left was the doom, and having devoured a boatload of souls, wasn't really interested in the rest of the ship as sustenance

Yes exactly, the nids need the ripper phase of the ivasion to absorb a world, because I know for a fact they eat wraithlords...

Pretty sure tyranids depend on the warp just as much as any faction if not more. Without the warp the hive mind wouldnt have the synaptic web. Tyranids psychic powers wouldnt function including synaps.
I dont know why people assume tyranids dont use the warp for their psycich powers, read the entry in the tyranids codex refering to the shadow in the warp. Tyranids psychic output is so strong it disrupts the regular flow of the warp making a shadow. I understand the confusion with the entry on psycic powers how it describes tyranids not using psychic powers like normal psychers but instead channeling there powers through the hive mind. But I took this to mean that they still use warp powers just filtered through the presence of the hive mind.

What are you talking about? Thats what I said, they USE it for their psychic powers, L2READ. The Tyranids dont rely on it for travel, so thats a big difference from the other races.

To avoid quoting a massive wall of text, yes, I was saying that the 'nids DO NOT consume, nor can they, Necrons or other barren planets.
Necrons would not yield bio-mass, as far as i'm concerned. Tyranids actively AVOID dead-worlds such as those the necrons inhabit. As shown in the maps of the galaxy within the codex.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

Well what about tanks, are tanks left by 'nids? they are metal like necrons. However yes, necron worlds do not have nearly as much biomass as a regular one. So they would avoid them, but I think Necrons can be broken down like anything else.
