I only went with DA for the rules, the army would be my own chapter if I went that route.

I'm only making the Ultramarine army a modest force though, since I do possess a substantial amount of marines (about 300 and in counting) so it's not that hard to split off a force for them. It's largely going to be a Horde-hunter force (befitting the Tyrannic war vet status of the army) so I doubt it would be that large.

You also don't have to go with the gold trim Ultras. If you plan on running a vet heavy army then go with the silver trim for the first company. Or whichever you like as you said you have a friend that already plays Ultramarines. It both separates the armies so they are slightly distinctive, but would also tie them together if you both team up.

I'm going with white trim as per the GW one. Also, since this has now completely moved into the modelling territory, either can someone move this or I'll start a new thread there in the morning. I have finished the conversions on the War Vets and will post pics soon.

No! Ultramarines are so useless! They are the Emperors vaginal flatulence and are just annoying to play against. Go with something you like, enjoy looking at, and love to play.

When you win with the ultra marines you are obligated to tell your opponent to bow to his spiritual leige.. Im sure that's in the codex somewhere.

Go with what you waaant. Make them DA. keep the models or convert them if you must, but make the rest DA ^^. You should love your army.

I think you should do the DAs. A few characters and a single unit should not sway you away from painting your marines as whatever chapter you wish. Even were you to go with the Ultras you wouldn't be able to use all those HQ anyway.

just buy the dark angels upgrade sprue to turn your tacticals into dark angel looking guys. in all the time Ive been playing though, one of the armies I see least often is ultramarines. everyone wants to be different and not do them. hence the 1 guy who does play ultramarines... he's different.

The chapter I originally intended had a more skeleton theme to them, although nowhere as much as the LotD. Currently though I'm still deciding while doing up the vets as straight up Ultras. I also want a 13th Company warband solely because I love kitbashing, so I have ALOT of marine projects running about.
