I currently own a sizable SM Army that remains unpainted. Originally the plan was to turn it into a Dark Angel Army as I loved the Deathwing idea. However I always get models "as a free gift", which invaritably ends up as Ultramarines. I now have the following: Cato Sicarus, Marneus Calgar(Power armor) Tigrus (both the old and the new) Chaplain Cassius, and no less than 6 Tyrannic War Veterans. While I dislike Ultramarines due to their proferation, I do not want to convert these minis as they are quite beautiful. My Chapter still remains unpainted but primed black (except for the Ultramarine elements) so I was wondering if I should just give in and turn my force into an Ultramarine one. Your Thoughts?

EDIT: For the record it would be my own Chapter if I went with the other route, not painted DA style.

Why not keep the free models as a painting project and do your army as you wanted to.

I prefer having the entire army having a unified look, not like some eye-burning rainbow. Plus, I have exclusively Ultramarine stuff.

EDIT: The perfectly balanced poll really isnt helping XD

Well I think he means you don't have to include the Ultramarines heroes in your force. Just use them for painting purposes. I mean, a captain box isn't too much, right?

An army of Ultramarines look awesome when painted well.

There was a guy at a tourney I played at who had no converted models in his army, where as every other army had atleast one squad converted.

He won the best painted army award for one reason - it was easily the best looking army out there.

personally a few lone heroes without an army to lead is depressing, to say the least. Smurfs or not I think they still deserve their own army.

I say just paint whatever you want and ignore what anyone else thinks. All this anti-popularism surrounding the Ultramarines annoys me, they are a nice army who can look really nice when painted properly. At least they got rid of those yellow shoulder pad trims. I would go for Dark Angels though and try to repurpose the ultramarine models into dark angels, as it sounds like you want to paint your army that way.

The Dark Angels idea is long and dead now. I just wanted the force initially because of Deathwing, but had no intention of painting them so. It's just right now it seems like the Emperor himself wants me to go Ultramarines, Since i basically have every UM model except the Terminator armor Calgar and Cronus. It's largely the stigma of having UMs that I'm afraid of, but I can convert so much more when going UMs.

Sounds like you already made up your mind, and are just wanting a go ahead from others. Just paint them already. Who cares. People make fun of the Ultras because they are the Ultras. Game wise they are no different really, from any other SM build. Ive seen some fully finished UM armies and they look great on the table.

The alternative (which I probably should have mentioned in the OP post) was that I could have unloaded the models on my friend, who plays Ultramarines already. However he seems unwilling to buy them from me and is more inching towards the "give them to him for free" idea, which I'm not so cool with.

And yeah, I've largely made up my mind as of 2 hours ago. Going ahead with the Ultras. Still feels like someone up there is telling me this is the way to go.

Then go with the Ultramarines as long as you like the paint scheme. Anyone who gives you trouble for having them, beyond in a joking way between friends, is a person who's opinion you can happily ignore.

I was just on a thread of a first time painter here on DakkaDakka, he had painted a bunch of Ultras and guess what, everyone had positive things to say about his paint job. Go for the blue and gold.

I'll be posting some Tyrannic War veteran conversions soon. Turns out, however, that I only had 4 (I thought I had 3 blisters of them, but one of the blisters turned out to be Mephiston). I'm going to represent the UM force as a Tyranid Hunter force, would people have problems with me proxying a Calgar with one Gauntlet of Ultramar as Petro Cantor so I can get the most out of the Tyrannic War Vets? (who are now Sternguards)

Absolutely not, make the tyrannic war vets regular vets. Make Cato count as azrael, Marneus could be Bellial, Tigurius as Ezekiel. It wouldnt take much effort to remove the Ultramarines symbols (At least the major ones) and paint them DA.

The Marneus model I have does not possess Terminator armor =x

And again, I refuse to harm these models.

I'd still say DW just because I love the DA so much, but if you want to paint ultramarines and you have the characters, go for it! I've honestly never seen ultra-hate anywhere other than online and 'smurfs' is more of a title than a derogatory statement to me anyway. Do what you want to do and enjoy every last minute.

Lol the irony here is that my Tyranid's main Hive tyrant is named Gargamel, since he often fights Ultramarines (and has never fallen, period).

On a tangent, The Cassius Model I have has a Bolt pistol arm, and it's lacking that little Rosarius/Ultra symbol/whatever on the back of his backpack. Did I get the wrong parts?

Already planning the conversions for Cassius and the three remaining Tyrannic War Vets.

Also, is it ok to use that particular Cassius Model or should I get a new one?

Well painted Ultras are very, very, respectable. Especially ones that actually bother to not do 2nd company like absolutely everyone else. The issue stems from blue housepaint dips with yellow... something smeared on that for many is their first foray into 40K. Ick.

I think ultras look pretty good if done well, but in the long run aren't that hard to pull off. plus there's literally a cubic buttload of ultra tutorials. even if you are a self-proclaimed rubbish painter you can at least follow steps to be sure. Try some tutorials and i'm sure they will come out looking pretty good

Currently working on the converting aspect of the Ultras, specifically the Tyrannic War Vets. While the rank and file marines will be largely the same (since they're primed already and dont lend themselves that well to conversions) the Tyrannic War Vets are going to get the full treatment. However beyond swapping out the backpack exhaust vents with Nid heads, I'm stumped on what other conversions are possible. Tacking on Nid carapace seems a bit excessive and doesnt fit with the flow of the armor, and the one-piece cast of the models themselves dont lend to weapon swaps that well either.

If you want to go DA, go DA. Perhaps have some sort of fluff where Ultramarines are supporting your army as allies or something? Have Your army distinctly DA, but whenever you want to field stuff that were gifts, use them as allies.

What 'bout my star?~*
