Why was ME1 better?
More freedom, more
RPG, less DLC driven and it had the Mako.
Also, better box art. Box art of the second game feels trashy and cheap compared to the first game.
Can you clarify how it had more freedom?
I hated the Mako, my
IRL friends hated the Mako (a couple of them stopped playing it because of the Mako), and it seems like the majority of posts I read dislike the Mako, but prefer it to scanning. You can get the Firewalker through DLCs and it handles a lot better.
The only must have DLC for ME2 is the Shadow Broker's Lair and it's defintely wort the price of admission.
How was it more of an
RPG? I felt that my character in the second game had more room to develop as a character. A lot of the posts I see attacking ME2 bring up the simplified leveling system, lack of an inventory, less abilities, decreased squad control, and lack of weaponry.
The simplified system is iffy. It's always nice to have more options, but so many games, especially those using a D&D system, have tons and tons of abilites that don't really add anything to the game. If anything, they deny you choices. You have to X score in Y stat to unlock Z. As far as conversation goes, this handled by your level and paragon/renagade score in ME2.
I don't think ME1 had a good leveling system. Putting points in a talent for it to go up 1-3% is outdated and unnecessary. ME2 has significant play diversity, but at lower levels you will spend a lot of time simpling shooting. Once you get into higher levels, classes play a lot differently.
I can't think of any game that has an outstanding inventory system and ME1 is no exception.
I don't buy the lack of abilities arguement. Every character has at least 2 abilites and most have 4. This is not counting ammo abilites. Shephard can have up to 7 different abilities + unity.
Their is less squad control, but the flow feels better in ME2. It can stand to be improved, but how does having lots of control over
NPCs make a game an
RPG? What about all the
RPGs where you only control the
PC?
I don't know about lack of weapons/armor. Visually, there is greater variety in ME2. You can carry up 5 weapons at a time, depending on class and options in game. There are at least 3 different weapons for each slot, but some of these are simply better variants of another weapons. Some of these however are significantly different. For example you can choose between the powerful sniper rifle with only one round or the less powerful one with 12 rounds per clip. A lot of ME1's alleged variety in weaponry is just having 10 levels of weapons with each one simply being an advanced clone of its predecessor.
The upgrade system in ME2 isn't perfect, but there isn't one out there that is. What I'd like to see is the ability to modify your weapon. Be able to give your assault rifle a scope, a forward grip, an extended clip, etc. Give your sniper rifle a laser sight. Things like that.
