TBH, the only war thing of M41 really isn't all that different from the current state of affairs. However, most imperial world aren't as brutal as one might think.
If the story is going to focus on an imperial guardsmen, I assume he is just some random soldier, then you would be looking at him fighting and his wife and kids being a part of the imperial train. So them in orbit and he is with them when he is not bringing swift justice to the enemies of the emperor.

I refer you to the Gaunts Ghosts series:
One of the main themes in there is family relationships in the guard. A femal guardsman and a male guardsman end up becoming the surrogate parents of two children orphaned by way. It gets a little more dramatic than that but I wpnt spoil it for you.
anyway, both kids are brought up in the regiment, as soon as one kid gets old enough he enlists, now why would he do something like that? Why would he sign up for a job that certainly leads to death?
Thats all kids in the guard know. The regiment becomes family.
As for the whole, husband leaving wife behind, that happens rather often unfortunately. The thing is, if the regiment the man is in gets algamated into another regiment that has females or vice versa, the person in question usually finds love again somewhere.
This leads to a few problems as both spouses in the same regiment will fear for each others lives and be devestated if their partner dies, whether they show it or not.

I beleive the point being made was that Children born into IG regiments is not the main, or even common, way of replenishing a regiment. Of course you have to realise that any IG regiment or conglomeration of regiments will be supplemented by at least as many camp followers. That point, apart from being as basic aspect of military life, was also made in Gaunts Ghost. Children born to IG fathers (or mothers) would likely spend their time there, not at the front lines. So their induction into the regiment that fathered them is not a sure thing, and given the horrific attrition rates of some campaigns, it's not particularily likely.

Yeah, they really do, but I don't know if there is enough money in it for GW to do that.
But hey, maybe IG players will get lucky and FW will start putting them out. Although the price for an army would be a tad bit high.

This is pure fluff for my chapter but:
The chapter was under strength due to a fight with the Grey Knights, the Apothecaries had to develop a way to restore the libido in some of the Marines so that more potential recruits can be born, however birth rates on their planet are at a high rate compared to other worlds because the quality of life is so high. So many are born from normal human parents.
Towering giants aren't exactly attractive to most of the local women. Poor Speesh Muhrines...

that makes very little sense (apart from the dangers of a human having a space marine **** them)
if the gray knights attacked them and serverly cut their numbers, how are they on an imperial world? (rebel worlds don't have high standards of liveing on a whole, and if they do not for long)
if this could be done don't you think the chaos legions would have done this?

I read there are worlds which are so far away from the Imperium that they are forgotten and the imperium pays very little attention to them.
And yeah, the reproduction aspect of Space Marines is off. The conclusion I reached in the chapters fluff is that it was quickly stopped because it wasn't returning favorable results.
Going into the biological aspect of it, I don't think the growth hormones would trigger a secondary development of sexual organs, in other words they aren't as big as a horse. The sexual organ's growth is triggered by a very specific hormone, one that (correct me if I'm wrong) is different from the hormones used to trigger muscular development.

I don't believe that multiple-gender regiments would be a common practice in the imperium of man. Societies of the past have generally employed women combatants (the modern age is the exception) only under dire circumstances - the society itself coming under attack. This was because it was the woman's burden to bear the child, and then raise the child, all the while doing the everyday activities that were essential to the family's survival: feeding and milking the goat, cooking the food which the husband had brought back, sowing the clothing that the family would wear, and much more. Therefore, the woman laying down her responsibilities to fight against an enemy would be much less practical than the man's doing so, as others can fill his role more easily (it would be likely for a male child to already be of enough years to fulfill the father's duty. Furthermore, in the event of his death, it is often a social norm for a chieftan of other brother to marry the widow and protect her until a suitable heir comes to age.). The reason this state of things has more and more ceased to be in the modern age is the increasing income of the world's general population, and the rise of technology that takes away the need for such constant work. And, the decreased need for children leads to less children, and more single females who would otherwise be tending to the house of a large family having the freedom to go and give their lives for their country. However, such luxuries are not to be in the 41st millenium, I presume, and necessity makes the place for women as it was in ages past.

Considering you have worlds with populations in the 100's of billions i don't think 10,000 or so women are going to make much of a dent in the population. Maybe in an agri-world but not a hiveworld where most (or at least a lot) of IG regiments are recruited.

Maybe some women sign up to join the guard.
Unlikly but still possible.
Maybe some women were conscripted into the guard from gangs. There surely would be all-female gangs and when they are conscripted you end up with a mixed-gender regiment.

well my home brew chapter actually uses a squad of Female "space Marines" They don't have the genetic modifications, but due to their status with the by then chapter master, they were given the right to wear power armor and fight in the emperors name. Though it has caused a few clashes with the eclisiarch
also on birthing space marines wasn't there a book about a CSM birthing factory on one world? Cold steel? Iron something or another?
