Cain is a great example of format writing. And you'd think he'd show some character development over time, like when he fought psychic Hitler at the end of the line, but no, still the same annoying guy who should know better by now and act like it.

Im stunned this many folks loved First Heretic. The fact that Lorgrar is so easily manipulated by Erebus and Kor Phaeron was hard for me to stomach. I mean if he is the thinking mans primarch he couldn't figure anything out.
I did just put down Prospero Burns and felt it was a superior novel n all respects.
A fav for me was mechanicum.

That's the thing about First Heretic. I didn't like it because of Lorgar (sp?). I like it for the other characters. And I thought a sissy for a primarch was genius. He turns everyone to chaos and still no one respects him. I mean he takes family cry baby to a whole new level

My personal favourite so far would have to be 'Brothers of the Snake', or 'Nightbringer'.
I enjoyed both immensely for their portayals of Space Marines and their look into the Astartes lives/battle-tactics, and Nightbringer particularly so for the Adeptus Arbites featured in the book.

Generalstoner wrote:Necropolis in the Guant's Ghosts series. It was the first defining point for gaunt and essentially set the series on the road it is currently on. Also great in the fact that it showed several other good guard regiments like the Roane Deepers and the Narmenian Armored Brigade.
+1! It is my favorite BL series (Eisenhorn/Ravenor and HH are the others), and Necropolis stands out for me as a great combination of character development and action. I think it also gives some of the most interesting insights to Imperial society with its detailed descriptions of Vervunhive and its denizens.

Its either the second or third novel in Eisenhorn, I can’t remember I read them when they first came out and then lent my copies and never saw them again.
In the opening chapters Abnett introduces 3-4 characters and then those characters all get killed as well as Ravenor gets crushed under the falling gat, supposedly killing him. It was epic and what you should expect from the 41rst millennium when losses are counted in planets not people. Awesome!

Frank Herberts DUNE.....or any of the books in the series.
Just kidding (at least for this thread )
Ok, so I'd say Brunner the Bounty Hunter....not Sci Fi, set in the Old World, and basically one of the most entertaining and plausible fantasy books I have read. Not as epic as LotR, but also doesn't take itself too seriously like so many books of that genre....

My favorite was Fulgrim until I read Legion which lasted until I read Thousand Sons. I have high hopes for Prospero Burns. However, since the Space Wolves continually act like ignorant jerks, I'm assuming my hopes will not be fulfilled.

For me its not a simple choice as I have two really
First is Legion - don't really need to say much about this book as we all know how awesome it is one of the best books from the HH series and Abnetts take on the Alpha Legion really made me happy and Alpharius' reason for falling to Chaos or at least siding with Horus just makes sense
Second: Guardians of the Forest - A Great little story from McNiel a human in the world of the wood elves and just shows the Wood Elves in perfect fashion everything to how I would imagine they would be to outsiders and how the act in the fantasy battle world in general.

For me, I found I couldn't put down Hunt For Voldorius. But then again I did have superglue on my fingers at the time . . .
More seriously, I love Dan Abnets books (yes I know a lot of people criticise his writing style) & even as a slow reader, I always finish the latest Gaunts Ghost installment within a few days of starting. Out of the series, I would pick Only in Death although a like them all.

Let's see, my two most recent reads (The Eisenhorn & Ravenor omnibuses) don't count, it'd have to be one of the Horus Heresy novels, as there the ones that got me back into 40K once again, As I'm only up to "A Thousand Sons" and have yet to experience "Nemesis" or "The First Heretic," I'll have to nominate "Horus Rising," as it's kind of cool to see the big villain of the entire setting before his fall.
My biggest disappointment was "Nagash the Sorcerer," I'm a big fan of Tomb Kings, but the Novel was too predictable, and the character names were all to similar, so people kind of blurred into each other, and i didn't realize that the Dramatis Personae list was at the back of the book. that would have helped me, but I don't skip to the end of books to discover such things.

Well, from the little I have read (only the 3 Gaunt's Ghosts omnibuses) my favorite has been Only in Death. 2nd favorite has been Necropolis.
My only problem with the series is that some things like Necropolis and Only in Death seem like a great complete story, where some of the books are way to short, and kind just seem to be there to waste space.

I love A Thousand Sons if only for the coverage of my favourite Legion.
But as for non-bias, I would say Eisenhorn.
As for worst, I would say the Sigmar one in the latest WFB series, is shockin' bad.

Well. I'm a little unqualified to comment as I've only read a single Black Library novel* (which makes this technically my worst BL book also, but as I actually really enjoyed it I shan't be doing that), and that a long, long time ago, but it's not been mentioned so I figure I'll bring it up.
Inquisitor (now republished as Draco, I see), by Ian Watson - just a really enjoyable, surprisingly twisty character-led story. One day I might actually read the other two novels in the trilogy, just to see what happens.
Oh, it's also completely non-canon, these days, which is always fun
*well, I also recently tried to /listen/ to the audiobook Aenarion. My god. Such purple prose. But I don't know if that counts as a Black Library 'novel', and as I only gave it 15 minutes, I'm unwilling to stick in the 'worst' thread.
