Tear - ah - nids

First time I read it, read it as that due to the first syllable being the norse god of victory, and others seem to pronounce it the same way....but it's really a potayto/potahto situation.

And Ouze......bad! *picks Indrick Boreale up and shoves him back in his metal box*

Been pronouncing it Tear-a-nids for the 15 years I've been playing the game. And I've never heard anyone pronounce it otherwise.

You're kind of assuming that the planet's name adheres to English orthography, which is an untenable hypothesis. Take, for example, the name of the doomed forge world Gryphonne IV, whose first vowel is almost certainly a short "i" instead of the diphtong "ai".

It's a fairly safe bet as it was created by an English company.

Also, a 'y' does not automatically make an 'eye' sound, it can be a short 'ih' sound - like in 'symptom', 'pyramid', 'symbol', 'cymbal', 'synergy' etc.

I pronounce it the first way you mentioned. As that was how the local GW staff I started playing at said it.

I don't see the problem here.
Although i can see how you would pronounce it similar to pyramid which is fair enough to me. I do however hate the Teer-nid pronunciation. It really winds me up.

Tyranids. TY-ra-nids. Otherwise it would have been spelled Tyrannids.

Also, it's NOT "tiranids" or "trigon", but it's pronunced like "physics".

Tear - a - nids.

"Tear" as in what your eyes do when punched in the nids.

"a" as in what you say when punched in the nids.

"nids" something you don't want to get punched.

...that's not the point. The planet's name is fake-Latin, just like most planet names in 40k.

In a fictional universe, it's entirely the point ;-) And ultimately the root is Greek, not Latin

Hi! I think I know how to pronounce warhams 40k words better than dawn of war because I'm always right, even though GW works with the creators of its games to make sure everything checks out.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

I'd go with either, really... though the planet Tie-ran (tyran) sould suggest 'tie-RAN-ids', emphasis on the middle syllable, like Tyrannical. An extra N would make it Tir-ran-ids.
I usually just call them cockaroaches, in a Scarface kinda voice. As in 'Joo Cockaroaches weel never defeat me! I am space Tony Montana!'

It's nothing compared to how you say 'Abaddon'! I'ce heard both Abba-don, and A-bad-on, A-bey-don, Abb-ar-dun... all sorts.
