Ok so this weekend I was gaming by my friends house and there was a person there that didn't like that I said tyranids like TYRAN- ids he said they are pronoced TEAR-inids. I told him arent they named after the planet tyran not tearin? He seemed to get super butt hurt after that.

I and my group of friends just say 'nids, but I pronounce it Ti-ra-nids (which I assume is what you mean for tyran-ids). I can understand why someone may think it is pronounced Tear-anids, but you are right they got their name from the Imperiums first encounter on Tyran (Ti-ran).

Hope that clears it up

Unless Tyran is pronounced like tear-an which we have no way of knowing. That being said if there are issues with pronouncing something from the 40k universe just look up a video about the relevant faction of Youtube for DoW because I doubt GW would have let them pronounce things wrong.

Me and my friends have always pronounced it 'tee-ran-ids,' but weather or not that is right I have no idea. If it turned out to be wrong, I doubt any of us would be especially bothered.

I have recently been diagnosed with swelling in the brain, so please excuse spelling mistakes and faulty sentences. I am losing my ability to type and talk effectively, but dammit, that is not going to stop me from trying.

I just pronounce it as it's written, as is the way of my people. Not that that does you much good, since the vowel "y" of Finnish doesn't really exist in English at all. It's the same one they mark as "ü" in German

You mean Pie-rah-mid?

Just kidding. I say tear-ah-nid (as in what you cry, not the act of ripping something), emphasis on the first syllable.

There's argument that it is pronounced TIE-ra-nid, assuming the word is descended from 'tyrant' or similar, although there are different pronunciations dependent on accent etc. so could still be 'TIH-' in some places.

Beings as the game developers have to consult with GW when making the game (how else would they know what to make) that means that the way things are pronounced in the game is the way GW intended for them to be pronounced. Just because you don't like the way the game mechanics (if you really expected a live action strategy video game to match a turn based board game I don't know what to tell you) transfered dosen't mean it's wrong

TIE - ra - nids

like the word Tyrant

They are named after the planet Tyran, and I'm presuming that this is pronounced TIE - ran, because if you wanted to name your planet Ti - ran, you'd spell it Ti - ran, wouldn't you? The only possible reason to put the Y in there is if you want it to be pronounced like Tyrant.

Really there are two ways that it could be pronounced, based on different analogues taken for various parts of the word, based on which pronunciation of "tyran" one takes.

You can either pronounce it a la "pyramid", as this is the closest word to tyranid in the english language.

Or you can pronounce it using the "I" sound from "tyrant" or "tyrannosaurus".

Personally I pronounce Tyranid using the former analogue, as it flows better off the tongue, due to the double "i" sound.
