The problem is you are comparing them in unrealistic situations. You can't just simply remove specific abilities and then say it is a straight up comparison. There are too many variables during the game to justify some of these comparisons. I will agree that eternal guard are usually overlooked and they even have some favorable matchups; however you can't just ignore magic, shooting, and every other unit on the table.

I have always thought saurus were pretty good core spearmen and they are the same points as eternal guard. If you run those numbers then the saurus kill 5 eternal guard and the guard will kill 2 saurus in the first round of combat.

Honestly, I really wish eternal guard were much better than they are, but I just don't think they are.

That's nice but what about T4 foes.
Lets take 24 saurus vs 22 EG (396 pts each), assuming 5 wide as you did.
Round 1:
22 EG 20 attacks – 13.3 hits – 4.4 wounds – 1.8 kills.
(charged)22 Saurus 15 attacks – 7.5 hits – 5 wounds – 4.15 kills.
Winner Saurus by 3.

(charged)22 EG 15 attacks – 10 hits – 3.3 wounds – 1.3 kills.
23 Saurus 15 attacks – 7.5 hits – 5 wounds – 4.15 kills.
Winner Saurus by 2.

Round 2:
18 EG 20 attacks – 13.3 hits – 4.4 wounds – 1.8 kills.
20 Saurus 15 attacks – 7.5 hits – 5 wounds – 4.15 kills.
Winner Saurus by 2.

Round 3:
14 EG 19 attacks – 12.6 hits – 4.2 wounds – 1.75 kills.
18 Saurus 15 attacks – 7.5 hits – 5 wounds – 4.15 kills.
Winner Saurus by 2.

Round 4:
10 EG 15 attacks – 10 hits – 3.3 wounds – 1.3 kills.
17 Saurus 15 attacks – 7.5 hits – 5 wounds – 4.15 kills.
Winner Saurus by 3.

Round 5:
6 EG 11 attacks – 6.6 hits – 3.3 wounds – 0.9 kills.
16 Saurus 15 attacks – 7.5 hits – 5 wounds – 4.15 kills.
Winner Saurus by 3.

Round 6:
2 EG 4 attacks – 6.6 hits – 3.3 wounds – 0.3 kills.
16 Saurus 15 attacks – 7.5 hits – 5 wounds – 4.15 kills.
Winner Saurus by wipeout.

EG dead in 3 turns provided they pass 5 steep LD tests. EG suffer from early loss of killing potential as numbers decrease and are generally overcosted unless guarding a character, like temple guards without a slaan.
Dwarf warriors or orc boyz would loose it if they're naked but who does that, shields on either unit would make them too tough for EG S3 to kill reliably and GWs or extra choppas make T3 5+ elves die even faster.
