Thanks for the advice! Headed down to the LGW store to start the army.

Thanks again!

In repayment for good advice, you must post pictures of your army once it is painted.

I have recently been diagnosed with swelling in the brain, so please excuse spelling mistakes and faulty sentences. I am losing my ability to type and talk effectively, but dammit, that is not going to stop me from trying.

Since this will be my first Fantasy I would love some feedback on my starter army.

I'm going the route of the Battalion set and a few heroes and maybe a special unit. If I understand the organization limitations, I think my list will be something like this.

13 Dwarf Warriors w/ Shield
1 Dwarf Warrior Veteran w/ Shield
1 Dwarf Warrior Bearer
1 Dwarf Warrior Musician

13 Dwarf Warriors w/ Shield
1 Dwarf Warrior Veteran w/ Shield
1 Dwarf Warrior Bearer
1 Dwarf Warrior Musician

13 Thunderers
1 Thunderers Veteran
1 Thunderers Bearer
1 Thunderers Musician

2 Cannon

1 Thane

1 Runesmith

1 Master Engineer

This list should tip over the 1000 point level and keep the acquisition cost low.

Thoughts?

IMO If you like Rome:Total War. You'll like WHFB.

Just that's how I once saw it.

I would probably add shields to the thunderers and make one of the warrior units with great weapons if not both (dwarfs usually strike last anyway). I would also make the cannon from the battalion an organ gun. You can set it up to interchange it back and forth if you want though. That just leaves you with buying a cannon and characters. I would make the thane a BSB and the runesmith your general. The master engineer models are cool, but another thane would probably perform better.

On another thought, you could make that second unit of warriors into rangers or the thunderers into quarreler rangers.

dwarfs, wood elves, dark elves, bretonnians, WOC,
space wolves, orks, eldar

To me, Warhammer is about having fun imagining, painting, and creating your own unique niche in the 40k or Fantasy universe. Any tabletop war game that allows players to pit their armies against each other in a fluid, entertaining, and reasonably balanced way is a success. I would much rather play against someone who is genuinely enthusiastic about their race and put noticable effort into assembling a creative and well-painted army than one of the more highly competitive rule-critical players that have been discussed in threads like these.

If your after an engaging, purely strategic game, then (as it has been mentioned by Sebster) games like Chess or Bridge are your most valid options. There is far too much dice rolling in both WHFB and W40k to consider them accurate representations of "skill".

That said, I love them both!

Since this post seems to have a life of it's own I thought I would update everyone on my plunge into Fantasy.

I went with Dwarfs and got a great deal on a army. I've collected about 2500 points worth of figs. My current record in a disappointing 0W-4L-1D. I'm still trying to play the game like 40K and getting schooled. With that said, the game is great fun and I'm current participating in The Battle For Karak Eight Peaks campaign.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm hooked!

And that is great news! Keep it up and I'm sure your dwarfs will rock soon!
