I keep my games for about 10-15 years. Once the nostalgic phase kicks in (Kids from middleschool now having jobs and can buy their old favorites once again), I sell consoles and games off on ebay. I usually get what I paid for out of the games if not more. I raid flee markets and yard sales and find all kinds of good stuff.

If you are patient and can hold on to the games long enough you can get quite a bit out of your stuff. Heck I bought my 360 and PS3 by selling off SNES and PS1 games. I keep some of them like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII, unless I find duplicates. (I got FFVII last year for $10.00!). Give it about 6-7 more years and you will be able to sell original xbox and PS2 stuff for quite a bit. I know I am using mine to buy a PS4 and a Xbox 720.

I have a big box full of N64 games under my bed.

I never throw out a game or sell it.

I still have all my SNES games. I don't think I ever sold a game (or a book). Part of it is because you barely get any money back and partly because there's always that miniscule chance that you'll replay a game or reread a book.

I keep all of my games.
Whenever I am bored of my current games, I go back and play an old game that I haven't played for a while.

Only once did I ever give one of my games away, but that game was really bad.

I'm a notorious hoarder.
Only 1/10 of my games will be traded in. And, on the off-chance I do trade in, it'll be for another game.

What about if you switch systems and don't even have the old system anymore?

I had an original Xbox, but I gave it and all my games to my nephews when I got my Wii a few years back. I have a PS3 now too, so I'd still never be able to play those Xbox games anyway.
