I think the narrow battlefields like depicted in this thread sell Apoc. short.: It is more like many side by side games that happen to be theoretically connected...
Apoc. is always more fun when yo have a little room to maneouver, outflank, race for objectives, etc., etc. imho
As such i find multile tables connected in varying ways ( some pushed togetehr, some "t-shaped off each other, some connected by bridges, etc.)together to make some bigger areas is more condusive to a fun game.
That being said this looks like a great photo- op: so many cool models

As far as the event itself goes, it was pretty awesome! Never seen soo many minis in my life! lol it made me wonder though how much time people have on their hands because I think I'm overboard with about 150+ marines but I saw a guy with tanks line the edge of two WHOLE tables and just as many guard up front to boot XD.

Slackermagee wrote:I have to agree with RedBeard, this looks rather boring. It needs a dynamically sized map (something like 6ft-8ft wide and snaking around the store) and a ton more terrain to really be pulled off well.
Would be fun to play once, but even then, by turn 6 I'd be burnt out from rolling dice for the sake of rolling dice and not pursuing some sort of greater mission.
Actually it was a blast for all involved. The spectacle and the humor of so much stuff on the table has its own fun. And people were in a great mood.
From one of the gamers:
"I definitely had a blast too and would definitely compare it to a GamesDay event. Even though I arrived late and had a total of 6 enemy players leave mid-game, and had to relocate to another table it was one of the best day of gaming I have ever experienced. "
Fun isn't always about the ideal strategic setup, and we had a few restrictions you wouldn't understand unless you ever set up a game of this size.
1) We only had 25 tables.
2) We had over 850,000 points.
3) We had to fit those tables within the area of the store.
4) We had to make it so people could either reach across the table or walk around it. And this isn't easy.
We had 776 sq. ft. of table space. The guys at GMI games whose record we broke, had 252 sq. ft. for 520,000 points and THAT was a total parking lot. You look at our photos and you see that by turn 3 there was lots of room to deep strike and maneuver.
Siegeworld is great, but they do it all on the floor, which is has its own issues. For next year we are talking about bringing in more 4'x6' tables which are more fun to play on and allow more maneuvering. You can't play across the 8' width of a 4'x8' table. You can across a 6', which is ideal.
Yeah, so map that out and you wind up with the set up we did as the one that works best. We had 3 game clubs work this out as well as James Bell, the Bunker manager, who has run more events than probably anyone around.
There are a lot of factors that go to people having fun in an event like this, and table set up is just one of many.

I simply couldn't play in a game like that. Everyone starting in charge range? Random sides with random forces working together? No. That's not the way or the reasons I play Apoc. I play Apoc to tell an epic story, not to throw down everything I have or play WalletHammer or anything like that. I'm glad you guys had fun, but that's the kind've event I'd avoid.

I like that kind of game too. But I also like doing things no one else does. And when you try and set a world record you can't have a cute little game with a nice neat set of teams and armies.
All my friends were there, everyone got to see tons of great armies, people were laughing all over the place, yeah that was pretty cool. We won't do it again for another year, but I know that every person who was there plans on coming back.

I agree with what you're saying. Tactical decisions go out the window in a game like that.
But, the "huge silly game" can be quite fun. The trick is not too take it seriously or care how well you do. View it as more of a big party than an actual wargame.
I know it's not for everyone, and that's ok. But, I do enjoy the occasional silly game.

Yeah, well you don't put on 750,000 point games so what is "huge" to you and what is "huge" to me is two different things.

Exactly. You at least GET IT.
You want to play all tactical and have room to maneuver, play 10,000 points on 3 big tables. This was 750,000 points and about a celebration of our hobby.

I'd just like to ask,
Are those Apocalypse Tables really this small? The ones I've seen were played on 2 4X8 tables, put together into an 8 X 8 large square table. Looked like a great time, but how long would a game like that last, where you are just sitting across in a 4 ft deployment zone, slugging the gak out of each other? How can you advance when you are sitting across from three or four titans, and how offsided is that sort of a game?
I wasn't really interested in getting in on these, but after seeing those pictures, that really looked like a great time.
Hats off to the job the organizers did on that one, that was a great effort on your parts, Great Job!

I liked the 'giant game' (This was pre-apocalypse, maybe 4th edition?) game a (former) FLGS did. The guy who ran it hooked the store's 4 4x4 tables together in an 'L' shape and had some enat random bits so anyone who vaguely knew the rules could play. You could walk up and be assigned a superheavy or a couple squads from the organizer's stash, with appropriate (if hurried) guidelines on your goals.
I only saw a bit but it looked like everyone had fun and there was some 'storyline' to it. A couple player appeared to take positions at the ends of the 'L' and played defense as various packs of various forces clashed int he middle. I believe there was a great 'OMG!' moment when the IG force realized that they could shoot on the diagonal across the 'L' shape and really push back the opposition.

The Big Game - Final Numbers
Well, it took me a few weeks after the Big Game all the numbers compiled and verified. I actually have an army list for every person who was at the L.A. Battle Bunker and confirmed their numbers, so the records are very accurate. We set every record that we were after. We kind of figured we would not beat the vehicle record, but I hear Siegeworld is after that this summer. So here are the numbers:
Los Angeles Battle Bunker
Total number of painted points on one table 739,247
(The previous record for the Biggest Apocalypse Game was 382,000 by Siegeworld)
Total number of models on two tables 864,057
(The previous record for the Biggest Apocalypse Battle was 520,000 by GMI games)
Total number of miniatures 18,592
(The previous record for the most minis in a Single Battle was 6,500 by Siegeworld)
Total number of vehicles 1,752 (Not a record)
World Wide
Total number of points at 22 locations in 5 countries 2,310,835 !!!
That is right, over TWO MILLION POINTS!
Check out the details on http://apocalypse40k.blogspot.com/
