GW's prices are pathetic. $37.50 for a tac squad

I remember when they used to be $25

and they try to give you this guilt trip about how prices of plastic are going up and therefore the prices of the models NEED to go up. it's all a scam. The only reason why I still play 40k is because I already have an army that I bought 4 years ago. No way in hell I would keep buying overpriced junk

WTF? 41 dollars! That's almost doubling it!

But I think you made a mistake somewhere. That can't be right

Several things to note with the inflation is they have to compensate for both plastic and employee's, admittedly they are influencing their sales based on demand(50$ for a box of 5 terminators)but, a term I heard 40k called has been 'Plastic Crack' I now see why

Australia, 5 years ago. It's $62 now.

Termies were also only $60 back then, now only $74.

It's been worth a little more for a while now and roughly 2-4 cents under for a fair while before it.

That $62 is $62.84 USD at the moment.

I'm not really complaining about the prices here though (thats what online sellers are for), I find them kind of funny actually.

Though there has been a lot of threads about this lately, more than normal.

Well in the end, my warhammer 40k budget slowly gets lower over the passing months since I started. Ended up spending like $400 on my 2nd month stocking up on paints, terrain supplies, 2 IG squads, a chimera, and a HQ. Now I'm just saving money as I wait for my FW accessories to get here. my next said purchases will either be the imperial bastion set or 2 squads of karskins+ a Chimera. Now this is coming from someone who has about $600 or so spare income to spend. But my friend across the hall who is struggling to keep $14 on him without spending it, that is another story.

Also yes in support of the above poster. I tend to be a bit of a RP for anything, and I consider my IG to be a well funded army (Hence buying many accessories and such) XD

Yeah, the Terminator prices are ridiculous. I'm starting the game, and a friend of mine recently said, "hey, I found a terminator squad I'm never going to use while I was cleaning. Want it?" I asked him how much it was worth, and neither he nor I knew. He asked for $5. I gave him $10, because I felt $5 was too low, even though he couldn't find the captain & I only got 4 models.

I looked up the price later. O.O

Terminators are outrageous, as are dreadnoughts. I could see both being the same price as a tactical squad, to be honest. The terminator kit is what? 2 half sprues? Dreadnoughts are like 4? It's silly.

I think both are so expensive purely because of 'cool points'. I know a lot of new players who absolutely worship terminators and dreadnoughts. They ARE pretty cool

I was really looking forward to new Necron stuff but sadly GW has priced me out. If indeed there turns out to be plastic immortals I suspect that they will cost more than terminators do at the moment (my guess is £30.00 UK). I'm a veteran player collector who has been into the game since the start of RT, the thing is I'm not a veteran who rarely buys anything because his armies are complete. I like starting new armies etc, I've got three sizeable marine armies as well as my own chapter. However with the steep prices I've not been buying much GW stuff lately, my money has been going on other manufacturer's ranges that give me my 'fix'. To be honest I'd rather buy 40k stuff as it speaks to my soul if you like, but the great GW have ensured that we are no longer on talking terms!
The saving grace is that other companies are getting close to GW standard, and even if they do not, so what?

GW pricing starts in the UK right?
Tax went back up this year i think, so prices would have been hiked up again.

I have a lot of armies, but other than my marines they are all playable at a reasonable point value, so I will be buying less now but I still can write out a to do list for all my armies, granted my Tau is very short list. (All SC another box of kroot and maybe a shaper.)

I don't think I'll start any army, but now I only buy when I need stuff to biuld and paint. So my unpainted collection is very small these days.

And yet, if you compare the money I've spent on 40k to the amount of time I've spent playing it, it is by far my cheapest hobby per unit time. Heck, it's cheaper than eating.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

we have a system here with my friends for those who don't have enough money for a full army, we take pieces of cardboard cut them out base sizes and stick picture of the units on them

I know a friend who has a full 2500 empire army and most of the units are cardboard paper cut-outs (he has a lord fully painted, greatswords a few cannons and steam tank all fully painted) not only does this save all of us money but gives us time too practice and use tactics etc

If we don't like using a unit its not a big deal to get rid of it, its paper

for example there is a game called vassal (tabletop gaming online ) that uses 40k pics for models

those are sprites if you get a higher quality one you can print them out heck pay a printing company and get them on good plastic paper etc...

for around 30 quid you can get a good print out of a 2k space marine army and then take you time and SLOWLY build up your real models.

AND carrying the stuff is much easier, taking 1 fully painted command squad and paper is a lot easier then a full 2k army and cheaper

Wow, it was that cheap? I started the game just a couple months ago (around thanksgiving '10). I wanted to start a SM army, so I looked seriously at the AoBR set, but finally figured it was too expensive, and started my army by buying used stuff. If it had been $60, I would have bought it easily, without even researching on the second market. It's all about the sticker shock. If you lower AoBR to $60, then second market prices will lower as well, but I don't care as much about pinching pennies on the second market when the first one is affordable. When AoBR goes up to $90, people have to turn to the second market just so they don't get priced out.

Seriously? $60 a year ago!? That's cah-razy. Now I'm even more glad I didn't buy it.

He's correct...a 50% mark up in one year (perhaps slightly more),but of course...that's perfectly understandable.

Really I bought mine like 3 months ago at the local comic store for $75. But that's the nice thing about old products at your store they don't change prices like GW does.

The buyin price is high. One you have a decent army, you really don't need to buy as much.

Now a days I spend about 40 bucks a month on warhammer. I'll buy one tank or so a month, model and paint it and have fun.

Like the Music Mafia, known as the RIAA, if they lowered their prices their sales would shoot up.

However do you need to buy that miniature a month(since it could be said if its not needed that its like buying a really crappy wow character a month)

If you know what list you are going to buy and your codex just came out you can have a really fun time buying warhammer models with an army that will last you a while. The problem is that most people don't go out buying armies knowing everything about what they are getting. Most people buy models without knowing anything that they do.

I bought about $500 worth of IG models without getting a single chimera... Now I have 2 of em. If I could re-do it i'd get 5 chimeras and save a lot of cash

Of course not, but I enjoy modeling and painting figs. That crazy other half of this hobby

Recently got back into 40k. A few friends played it but I hardly have time, and quite frankly GW had priced me out of the hobby.

Then I decided to use Craigslist for putting my army together.

Four days later, 1000 point army, $70 CDN.

I guess what I'm saying is, "If there's a will, there's a way."
