Think about it, for the past 10 000 years, the High Lords have enjoyed their position of ultra-super-absolute power over the IoM. I am pretty sure that these guys really enjoyed ruling the galaxy (free booze, outrageous amounts of money, Astartes as bodyguards, etc... ). During all this time, they pretended acting in the name of the Emperor whereas they where just pursuing their own personnal interests and letting the IoM decay and degenerate.
But now, Big E suddenly wakes up, kicks their asses off the throne and tells them to piss off. How do you think they are gonna react? They would probably be really annoyed. If it was not for Big E's supreme psychic powers and his custodes bodyguards, they might try something stupid to keep their power.
I'm thinking thats QFT, though I could see the High lords trying something before word got out.
Um, guys. They WORSHIP the Emperor. Just like everyone els.
They are politicians, faith for them is undoubtedly a jacket to be Donned when suitable
True, but if the Emperor was to rise the Custodes as well as the Titan guardians of the Eternal Gate would be the first to know about it and there isn't much the High Lords could do at that point, especially nothing that could be done secretively that could overcome that force. And, once word got out they wouldn't take the chance of going agasint him. That wouldn't be wised given his likely mood and feelings about disloyalty upon rising (I'm sure Horus would be fresh in his mind).

No I dont think he would punish the Imperium of man either, it would be a waste of time. Maybe his return will be the event to destroy the Eye of terror? Some power he has that will silence the storm during some huge crusade to shut up chaos for a while? Also, I have to agree with those that say the higher ranking people may betray him due to their sudden loss of power. Look how easily Horus turned half the Space Marines on the Emperor...... faith can easily be over-turned by greed and sin.

+1
The high lords became the supreme rulers of the IoM through years and years of political intrigues and betrayings. Or simply because their daddy was a High Lord or another high ranking official. I think we could pretty much compare them to the 17th-18th century's high nobility. A bunch of self-important and career-minded as***les (I might be exagerating a bit, but this is simply to emphasize my point ). Of course there must have been a few exceptions during the looonng history of the IoM. Some of the High Lords must have been great and admirable men. But I guess the majority of them were more concerned about their own priviledges than the good status of the IoM.
Hence, these types of people would certainly not be pleased by the return of Big E. Though they would certainly not have the balls to try anything against him.

Rebellion against the Imperium is a bit different then leading a rebellion against the Emperor risen. I have no doubt that some of the High Lords would not want to give up power, but I also don't think they could get any military force to attempt an assassination and they definitely could not kill the Emperor themselves. If the custodes and Titans weren't enough to dissuade any attempt at force, then I'm sure the numerous Astartes chapters that flocked to Terra to greet their resurrected grandfather would do the trick. Not many would want to piss off every Space Marine in the galaxy to try and hold on to their perks when in actuality they probably would remain in positions of power anyway. The Emperor would be pretty busy kicking ass for a while.

Even when the Emperor was kicking about before the Heresy there were still those that tried to contest his power, none had any success, but there were still those that tried.
Sure, more than likely the rebirth of the Emperor would be a good thing and most would be rainbows, cup cakes and butterflies. But it doesn't stop people wanting power and no matter how stupid it might be there would be those that would try. The Inquisitor War trilogy is basically what I am referring too, so that's Inquistors, but the same applies.
The High Lords are the Emperor in his absence and for one to turn from his life is evidence enough that even if he did return there would be those that could attempt to oust him, hey his favoured Son nearly did it once

It has been many many many lifetimes since his battle with horus. People today barely trust the united states government and we think that theres nothing but conspiracies and lies. Would you believe honestly that a guy that was nearly killed by a traitor is still alive on his throne controlling warp travel and holding everything together when he is almost just an empty shell? There are trillions that probably say they believe the emperors status only because the inquisition will label them a heretic and kill them when they dont. How many forge world workers and hive world citezens do you think are happy with their conditions? The Imperium is more ready than a Civil war than you think IMO.

No, I think the emperor is probably disgusted. Wasn't he secular? He promoted technology and science, not dogma and ignorance. I think the Only reason he hasn't just let himself die is that he wants to hold back chaos, so that humanity, and other races don't all suffer,

It all swings on how the emperor is reborn anyway. Star Child? Warp God? Walking Corpse?
If he's reborn it would take a while for his new ascension into the leader of humanity. During that period there would be no Astronomicon, chaos would be rampant and the High Lords would probably disband the Custodes (unless they didn't know HE was dead). So in a way it would be just like the original Great Crusade as the Emp gathers his lost forces and brings the light to the galaxy. Kinda cool to think of different SM chapters reforming into massive legions...
In the Warp God scenerio; it is basically Ragnorak. The Emp appears in the warp starts kicking the ass off the other gods, meanwhile in realspace the warp is turbulant and the galaxy is plunged into another age of anarchy and only the true believers inherit the new Galaxy of Man. Boring
Now it seems most of the other posts relate to the Walking Corpse option. Emp suddenly wakes up walks out of his sanctum and scolds the High Lords. If this is the case the Emp is NOT a happy superbeing. The IoM is a saviour's bad dream. The darkness that had taken hold of humanity during Old Night pales in comparison to the degredation, corruption and unenlightened behaviour of the 41st millineum. PURGE TIME!

Thats true, I never really thought of the MEANS by which he would return. Maybe the chosen person is growing up right now, and the spirit of the emperor will leave the present emperor and "posses" this new body? Just a theory.

I never thought of wjhat the SM would do if HE came back. Would they reform legions, with the different chapters composing the different companys in the new formation? I think its more likly that they would remain seperate chapters, but WOULD congregate all rally points, and it'd be a the great crusade all over again. Could you imagine the amount of IG regiments that the Emperor would raise?!? Automatically Appended Next Post: It would make Macharius look like a PDF rally.

XD Should have seen that coming.
I thought this thread was going to be about using WWED instead of WWJD, IRL. Not what would happen if/when he wakes up in 40k.
Scenario 1: The neighborhood bully punches you in the guts, takes your lunch money and other such dickery.
Response WWJD?: Turn the other cheek, give him your cloak also, ect ect.
Response WWED?: Summon your mighty armies, lead them burning through his lands spreading the cause. Let him hear the wailing of his women and lamentations of his people as he lies defeated before delivering him unto the afterlife.
Scenario 2: Someone cuts in front of you without indicating.
WWJD: Turn the other cheek, wise man is slow to wrath ect.
WWED: Utter a word of power, then accelerate through the smoking remains of his conventional vehichle...IN YOUR LAND RAIDER.
