I also use kitty litter for bigger rubble. For finer sand, I use construction sand I get from... construction sites. River sand also has a nice grain to it, and it comes with really small pebbles. All of them (except for the kitty litter) I can get for free!

Also, powdered/grounded broken tiles or earthen ware can also make good basing materials. Both dirt cheap, since you can buy broken tiles or pots almost for free, anyway.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

Just go get a twig and chip away at it with a knife. Better yet, a cork.

I've used it and had great success with it. Go for it... A huge container of Folgers cost me $7 and I've barely made a dent in it after basing.

Haha what? I use chicken nuggets on mine. If I need a piece to have a model crouched behind you can stack them.

I just take a smaller bit out of each additional nugget on top, annd use sweet and sour mortar.

They're in there with their bear.

Are you serious? The consensus seems to be that it's a bad idea, but I went ahead and did it as an experiment.

Did you have any issues painting it? I just got some rust oxide colored primer that I'm going to try out and see how it works out.

I've used coffee grounds before on my stuff as well. Emptied the coffee filter after making a pot of coffee into a big container and let it dry outside in the sun for a few days. Cover base in glue, dip in coffee grounds. Prime, paint.

Haven't noticed any mold or decay yet, and the models were based probably 3+ years ago. Also never had an ant or cockroach problem.

coffee grounds, tea leaves. All good. I haven't got any mold/fungus yet. The PVA used to seal it hopefully helps.
