Good home-brew chapters sit well within the existing fluff, they don't re-write what marines are all about.

Seconded, especially for IG. I've heard way too many home-brew regiments that claim to have been founded on Terra/forced back a Hive Fleet/Black Crusade/Waaagh themselves. IG don't work like that, they may be part of a campaign that achieves this, but no single IG regiment does this singlehandedly. AND those people that throw Regiment-specific characters in their own unique ones (Creed/Strakken).

I use home brew Creed with my regiment...he's a different character, I just use the Creed rules instead of having to make up my own. It's easier that way.

Yeah, he's a model I used with left over bits from when I built my Rough Riders combined with some standard IG bits. I personally think he looks very awesome....
